Wi-Fi interference investigation checks whether competing radio activity is affecting service at a particular place and time. We compare Cisco and Meraki symptoms with the radio evidence, while also checking coverage, demand and non-radio faults. Recommended changes follow those findings. A slow connection alone does not prove that another channel or access point is needed.

Define the affected service and environment

We start with the locations, devices and apps experiencing the problem. Timing can be important: a fault may appear during a busy meeting, a shift change or operation of nearby equipment. We record those patterns and compare affected and unaffected areas. This helps decide when an on-site observation will be useful and what measurements should be collected.

The surrounding setup is assessed without assuming that every visible neighbouring network is harmful. Adjacent businesses, temporary event equipment and the customer’s own radios may share the spectrum. We confirm who controls relevant devices and which changes are within the customer’s authority. The investigation does not include disrupting third-party networks or using containment as a substitute for understanding normal coexistence.

Separate contention from unwanted interference

Wi-Fi devices sharing a channel can compete for airtime even when they are operating correctly. Other radio activity may interfere in a different way. We examine available channel-utilisation, retry and spectrum evidence to distinguish these conditions. A high usage figure is an important clue. But it does not by itself identify the source or prove which app is affected.

We also review client distribution and traffic demand. A heavily used meeting space can exhaust useful airtime without an external interferer. Conversely, a short burst of interference can disrupt a sensitive app while average usage looks acceptable. Measurements are interpreted in relation to the symptom and collection interval rather than turned into a diagnosis solely because a dashboard highlights one metric.

Observe at the relevant place and time

A survey performed while the building is quiet may miss the condition users report. We agree a collection window that reflects normal operation where practical, and use representative client locations rather than measuring only beside the access point. The investigation records what was active and any environmental limitations so the findings can be interpreted correctly later.

Supported access-point telemetry may provide part of the evidence, while a targeted on-site survey or spectrum assessment may be needed for more detail. We explain the distinction between those methods. A remote review should not be presented as a complete physical spectrum survey when the tools cannot observe all relevant activity or accurately locate its source.

Review the network’s own radio design

The investigation includes channel reuse, widths, transmit power and access-point placement. Overlapping cells, excessive channel width or unnecessary radios can contribute to contention within the customer’s own estate. We assess whether the current settings fit the building and client demand, rather than assuming that automatic radio management eliminates the need for a sensible design baseline.

Changes are assessed for their effect on neighbouring areas and legacy clients. Reducing power or altering channel use may improve one symptom while creating a coverage gap elsewhere. We therefore compare the proposed remedy with the agreed coverage and capacity needs. The wireless capacity planning service can provide a wider assessment where the main issue is demand rather than a discrete source of interference.

Verify a controlled corrective action

A proposed change has a defined hypothesis and a measurable test. We may assess revised channel planning, a different access-point position or coordination with the owner of an identified source, depending on the evidence. We do not change several unrelated radio parameters at once unless the situation and recovery plan justify that approach, because it makes the outcome harder to explain.

The original app and affected locations are retested under representative conditions. We compare the same relevant metrics before and after the change and record whether the user-visible problem improved. Where the interference is intermittent or outside the customer’s control, the report explains the remaining uncertainty and a practical observation plan rather than claiming permanent elimination from one successful test.

Leave a usable environmental baseline

The deliverables identify observed conditions, likely contributors and recommended actions with their owners. We distinguish confirmed sources from correlations that need further investigation. A baseline of channel use and relevant measurements helps the operations team recognise when a later environmental change may explain a recurrence, rather than repeating the same initial investigation without context.

MCI provides Cisco and Meraki wireless investigation across the UK, combining remote evidence review with scoped on-site work. Share the affected spaces, operating times and apps, together with any recent building or equipment changes. We can define a focused investigation or broader wireless troubleshooting engagement that addresses the shown radio conditions without treating every performance complaint as proof of external interference.
