Multicast for financial market data carries feeds from providers to the systems that need them. We help clients plan and check the Cisco network paths on their side of that service. When traffic goes missing, we gather evidence about where it stopped. Feed details, receiver needs and clear handoffs guide the work.

Our engineers work with CME and ICE on a daily basis on behalf of clients using their market-data services. That experience informs the way we coordinate changes and investigations. It does not imply that the providers are our clients or that MCI grants rights to their data.

Begin with the feed specification

We establish which service is being delivered, the relevant source and group information and the intended receiving systems. Provider documentation and the client’s subscribed service define the need. A generic multicast setup is not a replacement for those details.

The delivery method must be checked rather than assumed. Not every market-data service uses the same transport, and this service applies where multicast forms part of the actual architecture.

We also identify the handoff between provider infrastructure and the client network. A clear boundary helps distinguish what MCI can inspect directly from what needs evidence or action from the provider.

Design the distribution path deliberately

The assessment considers receiver membership, the multicast routing arrangement and the network paths towards relevant sources. Where PIM sparse mode is used, rendezvous-point and reverse-path behaviour are reviewed in the context of that design.

Source-specific multicast has different needs from a shared-tree arrangement. We check the intended model and supported platform setup rather than apply one set of assumptions to every feed.

The design also considers where traffic should not be distributed. Unnecessary replication can complicate capacity and investigation, while an overly broad change at a multicast boundary can affect receivers unrelated to the original request.

Keep feed diversity meaningful

Where the subscribed service includes separate feeds or delivery paths, we document their intended separation through the client estate. Different labels do not prove independence if the paths converge on an unexamined shared dependency.

We review the relevant interfaces, devices and downstream connections, together with the receiving app’s expected behaviour. Network failover and app feed handling are related but distinct duties.

Acceptance tests are agreed with the app and provider contacts. Where a live feed or production receiver cannot be interrupted, the limits of testing are recorded instead of presenting a theoretical design review as a completed resilience exercise.

Investigate gaps with evidence from the right places

An app reporting missing data does not, by itself, identify the network component responsible. We establish the affected feed, times, receivers and whether the observation is shared across the setup.

Packet evidence, interface information, multicast state and app records can then be compared where authorised. The collection method and timing need to be understood before differences between observations are treated as definitive proof.

Packet analysis can help identify where traffic is visible and where the evidence changes. We distinguish directly observed loss from possible receiver, capture or app limitations, keeping the conclusion proportionate to the available information.

Prepare for changes to a live market-data service

Adding a receiver, changing an uplink or introducing a new routing path can affect more than the local setup. We review the proposed change against the feed design and the client systems depending on it.

The plan should identify authorisation, provider coordination, validation and a recovery decision. A quiet period is not automatically an approved maintenance window, and a successful network access check should not replace application-level confirmation.

For the wider service, financial-market network connectivity covers the provider handoff and client architecture. This page concentrates on multicast distribution and investigation within that overall relationship.

Financial-market multicast questions

Can you support our application developers during testing?

Yes, where roles and access are agreed. We can provide network observations and coordinate relevant tests while the app team checks feed handling. MCI does not on its own take responsibility for app code, market-data semantics or the client’s data entitlements.

Do you guarantee zero packet loss or a specific latency?

No universal guarantee is made. Requirements, measurement points and test conditions need to be defined for the actual service. We assess the network and evidence honestly rather than publish a performance figure without an agreed basis.

Can you help with an existing intermittent issue?

Yes. Useful starting information includes the affected feed, timestamps, receivers and comparison with unaffected systems. Detailed captures and feed specifications should be shared through an approved secure route, not attached to a public enquiry.

How do we request a design or investigation?

Use our contact page to outline the provider connection, receiving setup and concern. We can then establish the technical owners, evidence needs and scope before proposing work on the production network.
