BGP routing gives a business control over the networks it advertises and the paths it accepts from other organisations. That control is valuable at an internet edge, a private partner connection or a financial-market interconnect. It also needs careful ownership. MCI Network Services provides Cisco BGP consultancy and engineering support for organisations that need their routing policy to be understood, tested and supportable, rather than simply bringing another neighbour online.

Start with the connection you actually need

A small office with one internet circuit may have little reason to operate BGP. A business with independent providers, its own address space or several private counterparties has a different problem. We establish which connections need routing policy, what those connections carry and who can authorise changes. Public internet transit and a private market-data handoff should not inherit the same configuration without scrutiny.

The first deliverable is a description of the intended service. It identifies the prefixes you own or are authorised to advertise, the routes you expect to receive and the applications that depend on them. Where another company controls the far end, we agree a technical contact and an escalation route before implementation. That avoids discovering during an outage that the circuit supplier and routing provider are different organisations.

Turn business requirements into explicit route policy

A BGP session can be established while carrying no useful routes, the wrong routes or far more routes than the equipment can safely handle. We define the import and export policy separately. A default-only service, selected private networks and a full internet routing table have different resource and operational implications. The appropriate choice depends on the customer’s requirement, not on which option sounds more advanced.

Export policy deserves particular care. A customer network should not accidentally become a transit path between its providers. We establish a permitted advertisement list, review aggregation and check the origin of each prefix. Our BGP route filtering work addresses those controls in detail, including the effect of future changes to addressing and provider policy.

Design availability across the whole path

Two neighbours do not necessarily mean two independent services. They may share a building entry, access carrier, upstream router or power source. We examine those dependencies alongside the Cisco edge topology. For a business-critical connection, the design should explain what remains available after a circuit, device or site fails and whether the surviving path has sufficient capacity.

We also separate routing recovery from application recovery. A replacement route may be installed while an existing firewall session, translated address or application connection still needs to recover. Acceptance tests therefore include representative traffic, not only a routing-table screenshot. The expected interruption and any limitations are agreed before the change, without promising that BGP alone preserves every session.

Keep internal routing and security aligned

The edge must pass traffic into the rest of the network. We review how BGP interacts with internal routes, default gateways, firewalls and virtual routing instances. Unrestricted redistribution can undermine an otherwise careful external policy. Each boundary needs a clear purpose and an owner who understands which routes should cross it.

For internet-facing services, we consider origin validation, prefix limits, peer protections and management access. RPKI helps assess route-origin authorisation; it does not validate every part of the forwarding path or replace peer-specific filters. Private interconnects need equivalent clarity about authorised networks even where public internet validation mechanisms are not applicable.

Make changes observable and reversible

Our implementation scope can include a reviewed configuration, carrier coordination, a maintenance plan and a documented rollback. We capture the pre-change state, introduce the new policy in a controlled order and compare expected advertisements with what each side actually receives. Where supported, route-refresh methods may avoid a disruptive session reset, but their suitability is checked rather than assumed.

Handover records identify normal neighbours, expected prefixes, preferred paths and the evidence to collect when something changes. Monitoring should distinguish a lost backup session from a complete service failure. Both matter, but they require different urgency and communication. Useful reporting explains the service impact instead of presenting every routing event as the same alarm.

Choose the right engagement

You can engage MCI for a new Cisco BGP implementation, a review of an inherited edge or investigation of an unstable connection. A design review concentrates on policy and failure behaviour; an implementation turns an approved design into a working service; ongoing support needs its own coverage and responsibility agreement. We make those boundaries explicit when preparing a proposal.

Our Cisco and Meraki network services support organisations across the UK. For a BGP discussion, provide a redacted topology, the connection types and the problem you need to solve. We can then scope the necessary engineering work without asking you to share passwords or unrestricted production configuration through a public enquiry form.
