Cisco EIGRP services help teams that still use EIGRP to share routes within their network. Older setups can contain years of changes that are hard to trace. We review the current routes and rules, investigate faults and support agreed maintenance. We can also help plan a controlled move to a different routing protocol.
Cisco-focused engineering
Design around the platform, traffic and failure behaviour you actually operate.
Change with evidence
Use pre-checks, acceptance criteria and a documented route back.
Operational handover
Keep the configuration, diagrams and responsibilities understandable after delivery.
Establish what EIGRP currently supports
The first task is to identify the routers, Layer 3 switches and sites participating in the routing domain. We review autonomous-system or named-mode setup, neighbours, interfaces, advertised networks and any connected systems that depend on EIGRP reachability. The presence of EIGRP in a setup does not mean it remains essential to every part of the estate.
We also examine the hardware and software lifecycle. Some customers operate EIGRP on older Cisco platforms alongside more recent Catalyst equipment or cloud-connected networks. We check support for the actual feature set before proposing changes. An upgrade should not rely on the assumption that settings can be copied unchanged between platform families.

Review neighbour formation and stability
A stable EIGRP rollout depends on expected neighbour relationships and consistent settings. We inspect interface participation, authentication where configured, autonomous-system alignment and relevant protocol parameters. Unexpected neighbour resets may reflect link quality, control-plane pressure, filtering or configuration drift rather than a fundamental problem with EIGRP itself.
Logs and operational counters help distinguish a transient physical fault from repeated adjacency instability. We look for patterns across interfaces and sites before changing timers. Shortening failure-detection intervals without understanding a marginal circuit can increase churn rather than improve service availability.
A useful starting point

Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Understand route selection and summarisation
EIGRP uses a composite metric and maintains information about feasible routes. We assess the intended primary and backup paths, the metrics applied and the conditions under which a feasible successor is available. The existence of two physical links does not necessarily mean the protocol can immediately use an alternate path in every failure scenario.
Route summarisation can simplify routing information. But it needs careful placement. An aggregate advertised beyond a failed component network can create misleading reachability if the surrounding design does not account for it. We document where summaries are generated and what traffic should do when individual subnets become unavailable.

Data centre networks ↗Examine filtering and redistribution boundaries
EIGRP often coexists with static routing, OSPF or BGP, particularly during mergers and network migrations. Redistribution is one of the most important areas to review. Incorrect route tags, metrics or filtering can introduce loops and unstable path choice between routing domains.
We find the prefixes that genuinely need to cross each boundary and document the policy. Default routes require particular attention because an incorrect advertisement can redirect large amounts of traffic. We prefer clear, testable policy over broad redistribution rules that are difficult to reason about during an outage.
Investigate slow or unexpected convergence
When a link fails, routing recovery depends on detection, available alternate paths and the protocol’s ability to determine a valid replacement. We examine route state and the actual forwarding path, not only whether neighbours are up. Queries and topology changes can affect convergence in designs with unsuitable boundaries or excessive complexity.
Where a site has strict app needs, we test representative traffic during an agreed maintenance window. A routing recovery that looks acceptable in a command output may still interrupt voice, remote sessions or latency-sensitive market apps. We report observed behaviour and distinguish it from assumptions.
Plan a migration without unnecessary disruption
An organisation may choose to retain EIGRP where it is supported and operating well, or move toward OSPF or another protocol for operational consistency. A migration needs an inventory of dependencies, a route-exchange strategy, staged cutovers and rollback criteria. It is rarely safe to replace routing protocols everywhere in one maintenance window.
We can prepare a lab or pilot site, check prefix propagation and test how the old and new domains coexist. During migration we watch for route feedback, asymmetry and unintended defaults. The completion criteria should include removal of temporary redistribution and documentation of the final routing boundaries.
Support the routing estate over time
Ongoing EIGRP management includes backups of the settings, neighbour monitoring, lifecycle checks and review of new prefixes or site connections. We recommend keeping a clear record of route filters, summaries and the ownership of every redistribution point. Incident procedures should help engineers gather evidence before making broad changes.
MCI supports Cisco and Meraki networking throughout the UK, especially London, Kent, Sussex, Essex and Berkshire. If you operate EIGRP and need fault investigation, design assurance or migration planning, we can review the current state and recommend a practical path based on your network’s needs.
