Cisco Nexus deployment turns an agreed data-centre design into a working network with verified configuration, physical connections and operational ownership. MCI Network Services stages and installs supported Nexus platforms, coordinates the introduction of production workloads and records the evidence needed for handover. The work is planned around the customer’s change windows and dependencies, rather than treating equipment delivery as the completion of the project.

01

Workload-led design

Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.

02

Clear failure domains

Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.

03

Operational clarity

Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.

Confirm that the design is ready to implement

We review the topology, device roles, interface schedules, addressing and security requirements before the installation window. Missing design decisions are resolved explicitly. An engineer should not have to choose a gateway location or invent a route policy while servers are waiting to be connected. Any difference between the approved design and supplied equipment is recorded and assessed.

The deployment plan identifies the people needed from network, server, storage, facilities and application teams. It also establishes who can approve a deviation or stop the change. Customer acceptance criteria are agreed in advance, including which applications will be tested and which failure cases can be safely exercised. This makes the finish line measurable rather than dependent on a general impression that the switches look healthy.

Prepare equipment and management access

Staging includes hardware identification, software verification, licence checks and configuration review for the selected Nexus models. We check power, airflow, optics and cabling compatibility against the intended location. Required images and recovery material are obtained through authorised channels, with integrity checks where available. Unverified downloads and copied credentials do not form part of the deployment process.

Management access is established with the customer’s approved authentication, logging and access restrictions. We confirm how engineers will reach devices if a production path is unavailable. Out-of-band access, where included, is tested rather than assumed from a diagram. Configuration backups and device records are created before the switches become critical to service delivery.

Verify the physical installation

Rack position, power feeds, cable labels and patching are compared with the installation schedule. The checks include whether intended diversity actually exists: two uplinks routed through the same vulnerable path may not meet the design objective. Interface speed, optical state and error counters are reviewed before unexplained application failures are attributed to higher-layer policy.

We maintain a record of any physical deviation and its approval. A temporary patch may be acceptable during a migration, but it needs a removal action and owner. Clear physical records reduce the chance that a later engineer disconnects the wrong link or mistakes an unused-looking interface for spare capacity when it is part of a resilience arrangement.

Introduce switching and routing in a safe order

Configuration is applied according to the approved sequence, with checks between stages. Depending on the design, this can include VLANs, port channels, vPC, routed interfaces and fabric functions. Feature support is confirmed for the actual platform and release. We do not assume that a configuration accepted by the device has the intended forwarding effect.

Connections to existing networks receive particular care. Spanning-tree behaviour, gateway ownership, route propagation and firewall paths can change when new switches join the topology. We capture the pre-change state and compare expected results after each step. Production traffic is moved only when the relevant prerequisites are met and the team can reverse the change within the agreed boundaries.

Coordinate workload acceptance

Server and virtualisation teams verify bonding, trunks, MTU and representative workload traffic with the network team. We check new sessions and established services where relevant. A link-up state or successful management ping is not a substitute for confirming that an application can reach its dependencies through the intended security path.

Agreed resilience tests may include loss of a link, peer or upstream route. We record interruption, recovery and restoration behaviour and identify any scenario not tested in production. Tests are bounded and authorised, particularly where storage or clustered applications are involved. The acceptance record separates network observations from application conclusions supplied by the relevant owners.

Complete the operational handover

The final package includes the delivered topology, port schedule, configuration references, software state and verification results. Monitoring and backup arrangements are checked, and the operations team is shown how to recognise normal and degraded conditions. Open issues have owners and agreed next actions; they are not hidden behind a broad completion statement.

MCI can deploy a new Nexus environment or assist with a controlled expansion of an existing estate. Our wider Cisco Nexus switching services cover design, lifecycle work and fault investigation. On-site arrangements are agreed for the customer’s UK locations. Bring the approved design and deployment constraints to the first discussion so that the proposal can distinguish installation work, migration responsibilities and any prerequisites still to be completed.
