Private cloud networking links workloads, storage, management and outside services on your own platform. We plan and support the Cisco network alongside the compute, virtualisation and storage teams. The scope makes clear who owns the physical links, virtual switches and access rules. This helps each team follow a fault or change across those boundaries.

01

Workload-led design

Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.

02

Clear failure domains

Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.

03

Operational clarity

Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.

Map the services behind the platform

We start with the workloads and the networks they use. Tenant traffic, management access, storage transfers, backup operations and migration activity may have different capacity and security needs. A diagram showing only physical switches leaves much of that operational context unexplained.

The service map identifies the owner of each component and the paths required for normal operation and recovery. It also records shared infrastructure such as DNS, time services and authentication. Those dependencies can make apparently separate apps fail together. So they belong in the design rather than being treated as background utilities. Their recovery sequence should be recorded alongside the workload dependencies.

Decide where separation is enforced

Private clouds often need to separate tenants, apps or admin functions. We assess the role of VLANs, routing instances, overlays and security controls in the actual platform. Different identifiers help organise network access. But the design must still show where permitted communication is enforced and where it is denied.

Shared services require particular care. Monitoring, backups and management tools often need access across several boundaries, which can become an unintended route between otherwise isolated workloads. We document the required flows and agree controls that make these exceptions clear rather than allowing unrestricted access for operational convenience.

Align physical and virtual networking

Cisco switching must match the host and virtual-network setup. We review uplink arrangements, tagging, MTU, link aggregation and gateway placement with the platform team. A physical link can be healthy while its connected virtual switch sends traffic in a way the network was not designed to accept.

Changes are coordinated across the boundary. Replacing a host adapter, changing a bond mode or enabling a new overlay may affect forwarding without any switch setup being altered. The operating model should therefore require joint review when a platform change changes the assumptions on which the physical design depends.

Plan capacity around competing activities

Workload demand is only one part of private cloud traffic. Backups, storage replication and live migrations can create large transfers at the same time that users need reliable app response. We assess these activities together and identify where scheduling or traffic policy can reduce contention.

Capacity planning also includes degraded operation. A surviving uplink or switch may carry more traffic after a fault, and a design should explain which workloads remain supported in that state. We avoid presenting multiple links as sufficient evidence of resilience without considering their remaining bandwidth and shared dependencies.

Connect the cloud to the wider estate

External routing, internet access, remote administration and partner connections need clear boundaries. We document which prefixes are advertised, where inspection occurs and how return traffic reaches the correct tenant or app. Overlapping addresses and inherited networks are identified early because they can complicate integration.

Where the setup extends into public cloud services, the networking scope addresses the connection and routing policy rather than assuming responsibility for every cloud resource. The design separates carrier, firewall, platform and app obligations so an incident can be directed to the right team with useful evidence.

Validate both service and isolation

Acceptance tests cover representative workload access, management reachability, chosen failure conditions and prohibited cross-boundary traffic. We coordinate the tests with platform owners because a switch-level check alone cannot establish that a virtual workload or container service behaves correctly.

Results are recorded against the actual software, topology and security policy. Any limitations or untested scenarios remain visible in the handover. This evidence supports future changes and customer assurance discussions without implying that a network setup, by itself, certifies the entire private cloud platform.

Agree a workable support model

MCI can deliver a new private cloud network architecture, integrate current platforms or provide scoped operational support. The engagement identifies which devices and services we manage, who approves changes and how faults are investigated across team boundaries.

Our Cisco and Meraki network services are available throughout the UK. For an initial review, share a redacted topology, platform description and the problem you need to solve. We can then define the networking work without asking for unrestricted setup or implying that physical networking support includes hypervisor, container or storage administration.
