Meraki guest splash pages should help a visitor get online without making reception staff become the IT helpdesk. They also need to reflect the access policy behind the welcome screen. MCI Network Services configures Meraki guest portals around the visitor journey, the information your organisation genuinely needs and the network boundaries that protect business systems. A branded page is useful; a reliable and appropriately restricted guest service is the actual deliverable.
Coverage and capacity
Design Wi-Fi around the spaces, devices and traffic that depend on it.
Secure access
Align authentication, segmentation and guest access with the wider network.
Measured performance
Validate roaming, interference and user experience instead of relying on signal bars.
Decide what the welcome screen must achieve
A meeting room, a customer waiting area and a conference venue have different requirements. Some visitors need a straightforward acknowledgement of acceptable use. Others need a sponsored account or a separately approved registration process. We establish who the users are, how long they normally stay and who can help when a connection fails before selecting the supported splash workflow.
There should be a reason for every field. Collecting a job title or telephone number simply because a template offers it creates unnecessary administration. We work with the person responsible for privacy to agree the notice, permitted use and retention of any visitor records. Access acknowledgement and marketing permission are treated as different decisions, not combined into an ambiguous mandatory checkbox.

Keep portal access separate from network protection
The splash page controls part of the admission experience; it does not establish the entire security design. We trace the guest path through the access point, addressing service, gateway and firewall. The design should say which internet services are available and which internal destinations must remain inaccessible, including management interfaces and resources reached through a VPN.
We also examine whether visitors can communicate with one another. Client isolation and protection of corporate networks are separate checks. A visitor who cannot discover another laptop might still reach a poorly protected routed subnet. Our guest Wi-Fi isolation testing service examines those boundaries directly rather than assuming the appearance of a portal proves they exist.
A useful starting point
Not sure where to start?
Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Make the portal usable before sign-in
Captive-portal behaviour varies between phones, laptops and browsers. We test the automatic sign-in window as well as a normal browser session, including a returning visitor with a previous authorisation. Certificate warnings, inaccessible stylesheets or redirects to an unreachable external service can leave the user stuck before they have internet access.
Any destinations available before authorisation should be deliberately limited. We review the dependencies of the selected portal, including name resolution and any approved external identity service. A broad pre-authentication allowance added to fix one broken screen can undermine the restriction the splash page was intended to provide. Exceptions need an identifiable purpose and a test showing that they are no wider than necessary.
Different environments. The same care.

We check the access-point models, firmware, licensing and organisation configuration against the chosen access method. An externally hosted portal introduces responsibilities that do not exist with a simpler dashboard-managed experience. Hosting, certificate renewal, API credentials and incident ownership must be clear before the design depends on that service.
Branding should remain lightweight and readable. We favour a short explanation, an obvious action and an accessible route to the relevant notice. Large background images and elaborate scripts make the first connection slower and harder to troubleshoot, particularly on devices with constrained captive-portal browsers. The same design is tested on small screens rather than judged only from a desktop preview.
Define expiry, reauthorisation and support
Visitor access needs an understandable lifetime. We agree whether a guest should reauthorise after a defined period, how repeat visits are handled and how an administrator can revoke access. These are service decisions, not just timer values. A long-lived session may be convenient for an exhibition but inappropriate for a short supervised visit.
Reception or facilities staff need a short recovery procedure that does not expose dashboard-wide privileges. We establish what they can check, when they should escalate and what information is safe to collect from a visitor. Screenshots should not include passwords or authentication tokens. Engineers need the time, affected SSID and observed stage of failure, not an unrestricted dump of personal information.
Test the complete visit
Acceptance follows a visitor from first association to departure. We test address assignment, portal presentation, acknowledgement or sign-in, permitted browsing, session expiry and revocation. We also verify that an unauthorised client cannot bypass the intended restrictions and that a failed portal dependency produces the agreed behaviour.
The handover includes the approved text, configuration ownership, dependency list and evidence from representative devices. MCI can configure a new portal or repair an inherited guest workflow as part of our UK-wide Cisco and Meraki network services. Share the venue type, expected visitor numbers and the experience you want to provide; we will turn those requirements into a scoped implementation rather than simply adding a logo to a login screen.
