Cisco Secure Access services help users and sites reach approved web and private apps through supported cloud security controls. We plan the traffic paths, identity checks and recovery needs around your actual apps. The result should have a clear access policy and support process. The reason to change comes from those needs, not the product name.

01

Defined trust

Make access boundaries explicit rather than relying on an assumed internal network.

02

Controlled access

Connect identity, policy and network enforcement to the services people actually use.

03

Evidence for change

Test the intended security outcome and retain useful operational records.

Separate the access use cases

A remote employee opening a private app, a branch browsing the internet and a server making an outbound connection may need different traffic-steering and identity arrangements. We identify those populations before selecting the rollout components. Treating all traffic as one use case can create unnecessary backhauling, broad permissions or difficult troubleshooting.

We also distinguish app access from general network access. A customer may want to expose one internal service without giving a user a route to every subnet. Another workload may still need a supported network-level connection. The design explains which method fits each need and which legacy or specialist apps need separate treatment.

Establish identity and device responsibilities

We review the identity provider, user groups, endpoint-management process and any supported device checks required by the chosen service. Identity integration should follow the customer's approved permissions and authentication policy. A group synchronisation or successful sign-in does not on its own establish that every device is managed or that every requested app is authorised.

Client software and profile ownership are made clear. The endpoint team needs to know which components are installed, how updates are distributed and how a device is recovered when it cannot reach the service. We avoid creating a network design that depends on an agent rollout nobody has agreed to maintain.

Map traffic steering and private connectivity

We trace how each traffic class reaches Secure Access and how approved private resources are reached from the service. Supported endpoint, branch-tunnel and connector arrangements are assessed against the customer's topology. DNS, routes, firewall permissions and return paths are part of the design, not details left until apps fail.

The chosen path must also preserve the intended security boundary. A private app connector or tunnel should not expose unrelated resources by default. We record the allowed destinations and the controls that enforce them. For branches, local internet access and traffic sent to cloud inspection need a deliberate division with clear behaviour when a path becomes unavailable.

Build policy around business requirements

We translate user and site roles into app and web-access decisions. The policy includes defaults, exceptions and the owner authorised to approve changes. Categories and app labels are useful tools. But they are not a substitute for testing the actual service the business needs.

Inspection and logging are scoped with the customer's security and privacy owners. Encrypted traffic may require certificate distribution and carefully chosen exclusions. We check which controls are active for each traffic path and avoid describing all flows as fully inspected when the chosen mode or app prevents that.

Pilot representative applications and users

The pilot includes ordinary browsing, private apps, collaboration services and any specialist workflow likely to reveal compatibility issues. We test permitted and denied cases, different endpoint states and realistic movement between office and remote networks. A successful login to the portal is not enough acceptance for an application-access service.

Performance is assessed from the user's perspective. We compare the new path with the current one, including name resolution, authentication and app response. Where a change affects latency-sensitive or stateful services, the test records the observed impact rather than promising that cloud delivery always improves performance.

Plan failure and operational support

We find the dependencies on site network access, identity services, connectors and the cloud platform. The customer chooses the supported response to an outage, balancing restricted recovery and security needs. An emergency bypass is not introduced silently; its scope, approval and removal process are documented.

Support staff receive a way to distinguish identity, endpoint, traffic-steering and application-side problems. Monitoring and logs should make those boundaries visible. The escalation route identifies which team can act on each dependency so that users are not passed between suppliers while every dashboard appears healthy.

Scope implementation and migration clearly

MCI can assess suitability, deliver Cisco Secure Access deployment or prepare a controlled transition from a current service. We provide Cisco and Meraki network services throughout the UK, with rollout and ongoing support defined separately. The proposal states the chosen capabilities, licences, customer prerequisites and acceptance evidence without claiming that a single cloud service provides complete zero-trust security or automatic compliance.
