Cisco EVPN troubleshooting requires a disciplined view of the underlay, control plane and workload forwarding path. A healthy IP fabric does not prove that the correct tenant routes are imported, and an established BGP session does not prove that an application can communicate. MCI Network Services investigates Cisco VXLAN EVPN faults by following the affected traffic across these layers, preserving evidence and avoiding broad resets that make the original cause harder to establish.
Workload-led design
Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.
Clear failure domains
Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.
Operational clarity
Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.
Define the affected service and context
We identify the source, destination, tenant, subnet relationship and incident window. The problem may affect local switching, inter-subnet routing, a shared service or an external destination. Those cases require different evidence. We compare working and failing flows and record any workload movement or configuration change that preceded the symptom.
The topology and identifiers are checked against the intended design. Similar addresses can exist in separate routing contexts, so a diagnostic command in the wrong context can be misleading. We establish the relevant VLAN, VNI, VRF and attachment points before interpreting output. This avoids spending time on a healthy but unrelated path simply because the endpoint address looks familiar.

Verify the underlay without assuming it is innocent
We check reachability between the relevant tunnel endpoints, routing neighbours, physical interfaces and MTU. An underlay can pass small probes while dropping encapsulated workload traffic or behaving differently under load. Available counters and path measurements are correlated with the incident rather than relying only on a current successful ping.
Loss of one physical path may expose a problem on another path that was previously less used. We examine equal-cost forwarding and relevant link health where the evidence warrants it. Diagnostic observations are interpreted with their limitations; an intermediate device’s response to probes is not automatically a measure of its application-forwarding performance.
A useful starting point

Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Inspect EVPN route exchange and endpoint state
The investigation compares expected control-plane advertisements with what the relevant devices receive, import and install. Route-target mismatches, missing identifiers or inconsistent policy can leave peers established while a tenant remains unreachable. We trace the information needed for the affected service rather than treating the total route count as sufficient evidence.
Endpoint learning and movement are examined alongside host information. Duplicate addresses, stale state or inconsistent attachment can direct traffic incorrectly. We coordinate with the virtualisation or server team where the endpoint has moved or changed its connection mode. Clearing state may be useful in a controlled test, but it is not accepted as a permanent remedy without understanding why the state became wrong.

Office network design ↗Data centres & cloud
Network boundaries, workload connections and operational ownership.
Data centre networks ↗Trace gateways, borders and security paths
For routed traffic, we verify gateway identity, relevant tenant routes and the actual next hops. Shared-service or external connections add route-leaking and border-policy considerations. The design may be correct inside the fabric while a firewall, translation rule or remote return route prevents the application from working.
We check both directions and distinguish reachability from permission. A broad route import or temporary security exception can make a test pass while violating the intended isolation. Any workaround that changes access needs approval and a removal condition. Troubleshooting does not provide authority to weaken tenant boundaries simply because doing so makes the immediate symptom disappear.
Use targeted diagnostics and controlled remediation
Captures, platform diagnostics and additional telemetry are selected for the specific hypothesis and supported hardware. We assess their operational impact before use and protect sensitive data. Observation points, capture reliability and timestamp quality are recorded so that conclusions do not exceed what the evidence can demonstrate.
Corrective changes have an expected result and rollback plan. We avoid changing several unrelated variables at once or resetting the entire overlay as a routine first step. Where a vendor defect is suspected, the escalation includes relevant versions, topology and diagnostic evidence. A software issue is not assumed merely because the first configuration review did not identify a mistake.
Verify recovery and improve the operating record
Post-change validation repeats representative application and isolation tests and observes the relevant state over an appropriate period. The report separates confirmed cause, contributing conditions, workaround and permanent correction. Missing documentation or monitoring becomes a specific improvement task, allowing future engineers to recognise the same failure more quickly.
MCI can assist with one difficult EVPN incident or review a fabric with recurring instability. Our VXLAN EVPN services include design and migration work where the investigation identifies a structural issue. Share the affected flows, tenant context and incident evidence through an agreed secure channel. Access and disruptive tests are separately authorised, with the investigation limited to what is necessary to establish and correct the service problem.
