Cisco VXLAN EVPN architecture explains how a fabric links workloads, separates tenants and reaches outside services. We plan the physical layout, routing and overlay rules before settings are built. The design states its scale and failure limits. Your team can then test it against real app needs, rather than relying on a generic diagram.
Workload-led design
Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.
Clear failure domains
Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.
Operational clarity
Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.
Translate workload requirements into network decisions
We identify workload placement, east-west and north-south traffic, expected growth and the need for network extension. The app and platform teams help establish which services require mobility and which can remain routed between locations. This prevents the architecture from extending Layer 2 everywhere simply because the technology makes extension possible.
Availability needs are expressed through specific failure cases. We ask what should happen after loss of a leaf, spine, border connection or complete location. The network contribution is separated from app and storage recovery. A fabric can preserve network access without guaranteeing data consistency or session continuity, so those wider duties remain visible in the design.

Select a supported physical and control-plane model
The architecture defines device roles, link capacity and the routing approach for the underlay. It also specifies how EVPN routes are exchanged and how the relevant endpoints are reached. We check the chosen Cisco hardware and software against the intended scale and feature combination, including multihoming, border functions and management tooling where required.
Simplicity is considered alongside capacity. The team needs a design it can understand during an incident and expand without introducing inconsistent identifiers or route policy. We document why particular protocol and topology choices were made. Alternatives are compared against the customer’s needs rather than dismissed because they are less fashionable or unfamiliar to one engineer.
A useful starting point

Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Define tenant identifiers and routing boundaries
The design establishes how VLANs, virtual-network identifiers, routing contexts and EVPN policy relate to one another. Allocation standards reduce the risk of collisions and make automation more reliable. We check which values need to be consistent across devices and which are intentionally local. These details become part of a rollout schedule rather than being inferred from examples.
Tenant separation also requires an access model. Shared services, route leaking and security inspection are specified clearly. The architecture should not rely on an assumption that a routing context alone implements every security need. Where overlapping addresses are used, the design explains how management, monitoring and external network access will distinguish the tenants without accidentally merging their traffic.
Different environments. The same care.
Built around the work
your network supports.
Finance, banking and the wider private sector. We start with the systems and people that depend on your connections.
Finance & banking
Market-data paths, routing and provider coordination on clients’ behalf.
Financial-market services ↗Offices & multi-site teams
Reliable access between people, workplaces and business applications.
Office network design ↗Data centres & cloud
Network boundaries, workload connections and operational ownership.
Data centre networks ↗Place gateways and external connections deliberately
Gateway design affects endpoint movement and the path between subnets. We assess supported distributed-gateway behaviour against the workload and migration needs. The design sets out any coexistence with legacy gateways and the conditions under which ownership moves. Two active implementations of the same gateway must not be introduced without a supported, deliberate coexistence plan.
Border services are designed with the wider network team. Routing policy, default routes, external prefixes and stateful security paths are documented in both directions. We consider the surviving capacity and behaviour after a border component fails. A resilient internal fabric is not presented as an end-to-end resilient service when external dependencies remain shared or untested.
Include deployment and maintenance constraints
The architecture needs a practical rollout path. We check which components can be built independently, which workloads can move together and which temporary connections are required. Each temporary measure has a purpose and removal condition. This prevents coexistence arrangements from becoming permanent hidden dependencies after the migration project closes.
Software upgrades, hardware replacement and expansion are considered before acceptance. The operating team should have a supported method for maintaining the fabric without improvising its failure behaviour. We record any maintenance interruption and the assumptions behind reduced-impact procedures. A claim of continuous availability is not substituted for platform-specific upgrade planning and app testing.
Deliver decision-ready engineering records
The architecture package can include topology, addressing, identifier allocation, routing policy, security boundaries and acceptance scenarios. Risks and unresolved prerequisites are stated with owners. Review with the customer’s app, infrastructure and security teams ensures that the fabric design reflects the complete service rather than only the switching layer.
MCI can take the architecture into rollout or support a customer-led build through design assurance. Related services include EVPN underlay design and EVPN overlay design. Provide the current estate, workload plans and operating constraints to begin. We will define a Cisco architecture with clear assumptions, supported capabilities and a clear route from design to acceptance.
