Data centre networks connect applications, compute and storage through infrastructure that must remain understandable during growth and change. MCI provides Cisco-focused design, implementation and support for those networks, with attention to traffic paths, resilience and operating responsibilities. We help you assess the architecture that fits the workload rather than assume that the most elaborate fabric is always the right answer.

A new deployment, an expansion and an inherited environment require different work. The useful starting point is a clear account of the applications, existing platforms and decisions that need to be made before the next change.

01

Workload-led design

Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.

02

Clear failure domains

Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.

03

Operational clarity

Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.

Select the architecture for the workload

Cisco Nexus switching services provide a route into the switching platform and its role in the environment. The design should establish how servers, appliances and external networks connect, with supported capabilities checked for the actual hardware and software.

Cisco ACI and VXLAN EVPN fabrics involve different architectural and operating choices. We assess policy, segmentation, scale and management requirements rather than treat the names as interchangeable descriptions of the same solution.

The proposal should explain why an architecture is suitable and what it asks of the team operating it. Technical capability is only part of the decision if the resulting environment becomes difficult to maintain safely.

Make application and security boundaries explicit

The network needs to reflect the communication that applications require. Shared services, tenant separation and external access should be designed deliberately rather than left to emerge from individual connection requests.

We coordinate those requirements with the teams responsible for security, virtualisation and applications. A fabric design cannot establish every application dependency without the participation of the people who own the workloads.

Acceptance tests should show that required paths work and relevant restrictions remain effective. A healthy fabric view is useful operational evidence, but it is not a complete business-service test by itself.

Plan management alongside forwarding

Cisco Nexus Dashboard can form part of the management and assurance discussion where the current platform and release support the intended functions. We verify the relevant operating model instead of applying a product label to every management requirement.

Access, configuration ownership and change controls need to be established before automation or central management is introduced. Those foundations help prevent a convenient management tool from spreading an incorrect change more widely.

The project should also identify how the network will be investigated if the management platform is unavailable. Operational knowledge and appropriate access should not depend on an unexamined single point of visibility.

Connect sites, private clouds and storage deliberately

Data centre interconnects need a clear purpose and a defined failure model. Extending a service between sites should not be treated as a default design choice without understanding application and recovery requirements.

Private cloud networking focuses on the network supporting the private environment, not a blanket promise to operate every server or application hosted there.

Cisco storage networking has its own platform and dependency considerations. The surrounding network work must be coordinated with storage owners so that a change does not overlook a critical application or recovery path.

Assess new infrastructure without chasing labels

AI infrastructure networking starts with the actual workloads, communication requirements and supported equipment. A broad interest in AI does not by itself establish a need for a particular fabric or performance feature.

We examine the proposed design against the workload and operating constraints, including any testing needed before committing to production. Performance claims should be based on suitable evidence, not borrowed from a vendor demonstration with different conditions.

For an established estate, an architecture review or audit can identify which improvements matter most. A measured renewal plan is often more useful than replacing an entire environment before its current limitations are understood.

Data centre networking questions

Can you support a network in a third-party facility?

Yes, where authority, access and scope are agreed. Facility procedures, remote-hands arrangements and cross-connect responsibilities form part of the plan. The provider’s physical service obligations remain distinct from MCI’s network engineering work.

Is a fabric architecture always necessary?

No. The appropriate design depends on the workload, scale, segmentation and operating needs. A simpler supported arrangement may be the better choice for some environments. The recommendation should explain the trade-offs rather than assume complexity is evidence of quality.

Does network resilience guarantee application recovery?

No. Network behaviour is one part of a wider application and data-recovery arrangement. We test the agreed network conditions and coordinate with other teams, but do not claim that duplicate connections alone prove the recovery of every business service.

How do we request a review or project proposal?

Use our enquiry page to describe the environment and planned change. Our Cisco and Meraki network services can be scoped around the data centre and its wider connections, with specialist platform requirements confirmed before a delivery commitment is made.
