Average response is not a resolution time or a contractual guarantee. Support scope and response commitments are agreed for each engagement.

Cisco BGP implementation should begin with an approved route policy and end with evidence that the intended traffic works. Between those points are provider coordination, platform checks, configuration review and a controlled change window. MCI Network Services carries out BGP deployments for internet edges, private connections and enterprise networks, keeping the work tied to a specific customer outcome rather than treating an established session as the finish line.

Cisco-focused engineering

Design around the platform, traffic and failure behaviour you actually operate.

02

Change with evidence

Use pre-checks, acceptance criteria and a documented route back.

03

Operational handover

Keep the configuration, diagrams and responsibilities understandable after delivery.

Establish a complete handoff specification

Before configuring a neighbour, we confirm the local and remote autonomous-system numbers, session addresses, interface details and required address families. We record whether the connection uses directly connected peers, loopback-based peering or another supported arrangement. The specification also states which prefixes each party will send and whether a default route is expected.

Commercial and operational details belong beside the technical ones. A carrier may provide the circuit while another organisation controls the routing endpoint. We identify who can authorise advertisements, who will attend the change and how the implementation will be escalated if the two sides see different results. Missing handoff information is resolved before the maintenance window, not improvised during it.

Verify the Cisco platform and existing dependencies

The chosen router or Layer 3 switch must support the required features and routing scale in its actual software and licence state. We review memory, forwarding capacity, current utilisation and the expected number of routes. A device that is suitable for a few private prefixes may not be appropriate for multiple full internet tables.

We also check management reachability, interface addressing, access lists and the internal path beyond the edge. BGP transport depends on these foundations. Where the change affects the engineer’s own access route, an alternative management method and a practical rollback plan are particularly important. The presence of a configuration backup does not by itself guarantee that anyone can reach the equipment to restore it.

Prepare policy before enabling advertisements

Inbound filters describe the routes the customer is prepared to accept. Outbound filters describe the networks the customer is authorised to announce. We build and review both before activating production exchange. Prefix limits, attribute handling and any origin-validation policy follow the agreed design and the capabilities of the selected platform.

An advertisement must also have the intended origin and supporting route. Aggregates, more-specific prefixes and default routes each need deliberate treatment. We check that a failure will withdraw or change the advertisement as expected. A summary that remains visible while its underlying destination is unavailable can send traffic into a dead end, even though the BGP session remains healthy.

Introduce the service in controlled stages

A typical implementation separates configuration preparation, neighbour activation, policy verification and traffic cutover. This gives engineers opportunities to stop before a wrong advertisement affects production. We compare the received route set with the handoff specification and ask the remote team to confirm what it sees from our side.

Where old and new services coexist, the plan defines which path should win at each stage. Temporary preferences and redistribution are recorded with removal criteria. We do not leave migration exceptions in place merely because the cutover appeared successful. The final configuration should represent the intended operating design, not a collection of temporary measures that nobody has revisited.

Test forwarding, failure and restoration

The acceptance record includes session state, advertised and accepted prefixes, selected next hops and representative application tests. A connection used for business-to-business traffic needs validation from both ends. Return-path problems can be missed when testing only from the customer’s router, particularly where stateful firewalls or address translation are involved.

For a resilient design, we agree which faults can be safely simulated. Losing an individual session, disconnecting a circuit and restarting a router test different things. We observe recovery and restoration, including the effect on existing sessions and the capacity of the surviving path. Any scenario that cannot be exercised safely is recorded as untested rather than silently counted as proven.

Leave the operations team with usable records

The handover contains the topology, neighbour register, prefix policy, normal path selection and escalation contacts. It also explains which changes require coordination with a provider. New prefixes, autonomous-system changes and modifications to route-origin records should not be treated as routine edits without considering their effect outside the organisation.

Monitoring requirements are agreed as part of delivery. They may include neighbour loss, unexpected route counts and withdrawal of important prefixes. Thresholds should reflect the actual service, with an owner for each alarm. A monitoring platform that reports a session failure but has no response procedure does not complete the operational handover.

Arrange a defined implementation scope

MCI’s BGP routing services include design and support as separate or combined engagements. For an implementation proposal, we need the approved topology, provider handoff and intended cutover constraints. We can also identify gaps in those inputs before work starts. Network changes, carrier repair obligations and application testing responsibilities are stated separately so the customer knows exactly what the implementation covers.
