Meraki branch networks should give a business a repeatable way to connect its sites without ignoring the differences between them. A sales office, warehouse and customer-facing location may need the same central visibility but very different local traffic paths. MCI Network Services designs branch connectivity around those requirements, combining supported Meraki edge, switching and wireless components with the services already in place. The result is an operating design with clear ownership, not simply a standard equipment list sent to every address.

Dashboard clarity

Structure organisations, networks and permissions around real operational ownership.

Consistent sites

Use repeatable standards without ignoring the differences between locations.

Practical operations

Keep cloud management connected to physical links, users and business services.

Describe what the branch must keep doing

We start with the work performed at the site. Cloud applications, voice, local printing, specialist systems and links to head office have different dependencies. We identify which services must remain available if a circuit fails and which can tolerate a planned interruption. The design also records whether the branch needs local servers, third-party access or separate guest and building networks.

That service picture informs capacity and resilience. A branch with a small headcount may still carry demanding or sensitive traffic. Conversely, a straightforward office may not need an elaborate topology. We assess traffic patterns, available circuits and support arrangements before deciding how much complexity is justified. Availability claims are tied to the full path, including power and carrier dependencies, rather than the number of appliances in the cabinet.

Assign edge, switching and wireless roles

The design states where gateways, security policy and address allocation will operate. Some sites can use an MX as the principal routed edge; others need downstream Layer 3 switching or a specialist connection retained on another platform. We verify the supported capabilities and trace the return paths. A hybrid Cisco and Meraki design is acceptable when it serves the requirement better than forcing every function onto one device.

Wireless is considered as part of the branch service, not an accessory. Access-point placement, power, authentication and client addressing depend on the switching and edge design. The Meraki wireless deployment service can provide the detailed commissioning once the site requirements are established. Adding more access points is not assumed to solve an application fault caused by a congested circuit or incorrect gateway policy.

Plan connectivity and failover honestly

We review primary and backup connections, including their addressing, installation dates and underlying carrier diversity. Two retail brands may still rely on the same local infrastructure. Cellular can offer an alternative path, but signal quality, data allowance and carrier translation need assessment. The customer should understand what remains operational when the branch uses its reduced-capacity or differently addressed backup service.

VPN and internet-breakout choices are documented for each application group. A working tunnel does not prove that all required subnets, DNS services or security policies are correct. We test representative flows and identify responsibilities at the remote end. Where another provider controls a hub or partner connection, its participation is included in the plan rather than assumed to be available during an unannounced cutover.

Standardise where it helps

Common configuration can reduce mistakes and speed deployment. We develop branch patterns with named exceptions for differences such as local servers, regulated devices or unusual carrier handoffs. A template relationship is chosen only when its inherited settings and override behaviour suit the site. The Meraki branch network standardisation service develops that repeatable model across a wider estate.

The baseline includes administration, alert ownership and recovery information. A consistent configuration is less useful if engineers cannot identify a site or reach the authorised customer contact. We also record how local staff can assist safely with basic checks without being asked to change network settings they do not understand. Clear labelling and simple escalation information can shorten an incident without expanding unapproved access.

Stage, commission and hand over

Deployment begins with inventory assignment, software preparation and validation of the site handoff. The change plan covers the order of device installation, migration of existing connections and rollback conditions. Where opening dates are fixed, outstanding dependencies are tracked explicitly so a delayed circuit or incomplete cabling installation is not hidden inside a general promise that the network will be ready.

Acceptance checks follow the original service requirements. They include client addressing, application access, guest restrictions and agreed failure scenarios. The handover records what was tested, the limitations of the backup path and which party responds to each type of fault. Dashboard visibility is part of that evidence, but it does not replace user-level checks.

A defined branch service

MCI can design one site, support a rollout programme or take on agreed operational tasks alongside your IT team. We provide Cisco and Meraki network services across the UK, with particular strength in London, Kent, Sussex, Essex and Berkshire. For a proposal, the most useful starting points are site locations, key applications, circuit details and the business consequences of an outage. We then scope the engineering work and provider responsibilities before committing to delivery dates or response targets.
