Meraki remote worker gateways can extend a controlled corporate connection to staff working away from an office. They are useful where a business needs more than an unmanaged home router, but they still depend on the local broadband, endpoint configuration and central services. MCI Network Services plans supported gateway deployments with clear separation between work and household traffic, a repeatable provisioning process and realistic support boundaries. The service is designed around the employee’s work requirements rather than simply shipping another device.

01

Dashboard clarity

Structure organisations, networks and permissions around real operational ownership.

02

Consistent sites

Use repeatable standards without ignoring the differences between locations.

03

Practical operations

Keep cloud management connected to physical links, users and business services.

Decide whether a gateway is the right solution

We identify the applications, peripherals and working arrangements involved. A user with a corporate phone and several managed devices may have different needs from someone who only accesses browser-based applications. The assessment considers whether a gateway, software-based remote access or another supported architecture best fits the requirement. Installing hardware is not automatically the simplest or most secure answer for every remote employee.

The business defines what should be reachable and who is authorised to use the connection. A site-to-site path should not grant unrestricted access merely because it originates from a company-owned appliance. We review the central network’s routing and security policy, including the services needed for authentication, name resolution and device management. Those dependencies are agreed with the teams that operate them.

Separate corporate and local networks

The design distinguishes managed work devices from household or unrelated equipment. We consider wired and wireless connection needs, local addressing and any permitted access to printers or other peripherals. Overlap with the home network or corporate subnets can create routing problems, so the addressing plan is checked before the gateway is provisioned at scale.

Traffic breakout is made explicit. The customer should understand which traffic uses the corporate path and which uses local internet access, subject to the supported design. Privacy and monitoring boundaries are explained to the responsible business team. We do not assume that extending corporate connectivity gives an employer a reason to inspect unrelated household traffic or manage equipment outside the agreed scope.

Check the local connection realistically

Home broadband can involve provider-managed routers, dynamic addressing, translation and variable performance. We assess the installation requirements and identify any upstream settings or carrier limitations that could affect the gateway. A connection suitable for ordinary browsing may still struggle with real-time voice or a particular VPN path. The support process needs a way to distinguish these conditions from a gateway configuration fault.

Where a cellular option or backup path is proposed, eligibility, signal and service-plan conditions are checked separately. We avoid a blanket promise that every home will have equivalent coverage or failover behaviour. The user receives practical installation guidance and a clear route for reporting a problem without being asked to make unsupported changes to the household’s existing router.

Provision a controlled device baseline

The gateway is claimed to the correct customer organisation and assigned the appropriate network and configuration model. We establish names, device ownership and the employee or location record without storing unnecessary personal information in broadly visible dashboard fields. Firmware preparation, access controls and the required central connectivity are checked before dispatch where practical.

A repeatable baseline should still allow approved exceptions. Different broadband handoffs, accessibility needs or specialist peripherals may require additional preparation. Our Meraki branch network standardisation approach can inform the process, but remote-worker deployments are not treated as small offices with identical physical and support conditions. The handover must fit a user who may not be a network engineer.

Test the working experience

Commissioning verifies more than tunnel state. We test representative applications, name resolution, corporate voice where included and the intended restrictions on local traffic. The user should know how to connect approved equipment and what to do after a power or broadband interruption. Tests include a clean reconnect so that success is not dependent on a session established during staging.

Performance expectations are based on the actual path. A gateway cannot guarantee the capacity of a residential circuit or the availability of a remote application. We record known limitations and provide evidence for escalation when the issue belongs to the broadband provider or another service owner. This avoids leaving the employee between several teams, each reporting that its own component appears healthy.

Manage departure and replacement

The operating procedure covers a lost or failed gateway, an employee moving home and the end of employment. Access must be withdrawn and equipment recovered or decommissioned through an agreed process. Device ownership, subscriptions and configuration records need updating together; removing one user account may not remove the gateway’s network access.

MCI can design the remote-worker service, prepare devices and support deployment across an agreed user group. Ongoing assistance is scoped within Meraki network support, with a clear boundary between corporate networking, endpoint support and household connectivity. The goal is a manageable extension of the business network, with responsibilities that remain understandable when a user needs help from home.
