Connected Building Networks
Prepare Cisco and Meraki networks for connected building systems, with controlled device access, capacity planning and attention to privacy and ownership.

Average response is not a resolution time or a contractual guarantee. Support scope and response commitments are agreed for each engagement.
Connected building networks link cameras, sensors, access controls and other building services. These devices often have different owners and support teams. We plan Cisco and Meraki capacity, power and access rules around their needs. Clear records and account ownership help you add or replace equipment without losing track of who controls each part.
Dashboard clarity
Structure organisations, networks and permissions around real operational ownership.
Consistent sites
Use repeatable standards without ignoring the differences between locations.
Practical operations
Keep cloud management connected to physical links, users and business services.
Start with a service and ownership register
We find the systems that need network access and the people responsible for them. Facilities, security, IT and specialist contractors may each control different parts of the same building. The register connects devices to their purpose, location, management platform and support contact. It also identifies who can approve a network change and who must confirm that the building service still operates afterwards.
This prevents an assumption that all equipment can be managed like an ordinary workstation. A camera, door controller and environmental sensor may have different maintenance constraints and consequences of failure. We agree those boundaries with the relevant specialists. Network engineering does not replace the certification, commissioning or safety duties associated with a particular building system.

Plan physical connectivity and power together
Device location influences cabling, wireless coverage, switching capacity and power delivery. We review the actual endpoint needs and the available cabinet infrastructure. PoE capability at an individual port is only one part of the calculation. The switch’s total budget and the effect of a power-supply failure also matter. The design records which services share a common power dependency.
Installation access can be difficult after a building is occupied. We coordinate mounting and cable-route needs early, with the appropriate facilities or installation team. The network plan identifies environmental constraints, maintenance access and any specialist work outside our scope. This reduces the risk of an otherwise suitable device being placed where its network access is unreliable or it cannot be serviced safely.
A useful starting point
Not sure where to start?
Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Separate devices according to their required communication
Connected equipment should receive the access it needs, not unrestricted membership of the corporate network. We find the management servers, cloud destinations and local peers each system uses, then design suitable VLAN, routing and policy boundaries. A separate VLAN helps organise traffic. But the permitted paths between networks still need deliberate enforcement.
Supplier support access is reviewed separately. We establish whether remote access is required, how it is authorised and who can remove it. Shared credentials and permanent broad access are not treated as inevitable features of building technology. Where a legacy device limits the available controls, the limitation is documented and compensating network measures are considered with the responsible owner.
Different environments. The same care.
Built around the work

Finance, banking and the wider private sector. We start with the systems and people that depend on your connections.

Data centre networks ↗Account for management and data flows
A connected building can generate several kinds of traffic: control commands, telemetry, live video, software updates and admin access. We assess the relevant paths and peak conditions rather than relying on a single average bandwidth estimate. For example, a video wall or an incident-related export can create demand that is absent during routine background operation.
Data ownership also needs clarity. Location information, camera footage and device activity may have privacy or confidentiality implications. We check what the network integration sends, where it is sent and who controls access. The customer’s responsible teams approve the purpose and handling arrangements. We do not label all building telemetry anonymous or assume that a vendor’s privacy features resolve every deployment-specific obligation.
Test operational failures, not only normal connectivity
Acceptance tests include the actual building functions and their network dependencies. We work with the service owner to check representative events, such as an alert reaching the correct team or an authorised operator viewing a camera. A device responding to a network probe does not prove that the associated operational workflow is complete.
We also examine agreed failure scenarios: loss of a gateway, an uplink or management network access. The report explains which functions continue, which become unavailable and who receives notification. Where a service has a safety-critical role, specialist needs take precedence. A general-purpose sensor or network alert is not presented as a substitute for an appropriately designed life-safety system.
Keep the building manageable as it changes
Handover includes device locations, addressing, power dependencies, approved flows and supplier duties. New equipment requests should pass through the same process so later additions do not bypass the original design. Periodic review can identify devices that are no longer supported, unused remote access and settings that have drifted from the agreed baseline.
MCI’s Cisco and Meraki network services can support a new building project or improve a current estate. Specialist work includes building systems network isolation, camera-network readiness and sensor integration. We welcome UK-wide enquiries and can coordinate with your facilities, security and app teams to deliver the networking component without blurring responsibility for the systems it connects.
