Cisco Catalyst Center brings network inventory, changes, software and health data into one place. It works best when you know what you want it to do. We help you set up and use the platform for clear tasks, from managing a campus to preparing SD-Access. Device support and the team’s working process both matter.

01

Cisco-focused engineering

Design around the platform, traffic and failure behaviour you actually operate.

02

Change with evidence

Use pre-checks, acceptance criteria and a documented route back.

03

Operational handover

Keep the configuration, diagrams and responsibilities understandable after delivery.

Start with the work you want to improve

A customer may want a reliable inventory, controlled software rollouts, repeatable setup or faster client investigation. Those goals need different preparation and acceptance tests. We find the first useful outcomes and prioritise them, rather than enabling every feature before anyone has agreed who will own it.

Catalyst Center is not limited to fabric rollout, and a conventional network does not need to become SD-Access simply to benefit from supported management functions. Conversely, deploying the platform does not on its own make every device fully manageable or every assurance feature available. We review the actual devices, releases and entitlements against the intended functions.

Build a secure management foundation

The rollout needs appropriate compute or appliance resources, network access, name resolution, time synchronisation and certificates. We assess the supported rollout form and its operational dependencies. Management interfaces and admin access are treated as privileged infrastructure, with a clear route for both routine use and recovery.

Identity, role allocation and service accounts are agreed with the customer’s security team. We avoid leaving a shared administrator account as the ordinary operating model. Backup protection, update duties and the ownership of external integrations are established before the platform becomes a dependency for network changes.

Discover and organise the estate accurately

Device discovery depends on correct credentials, supported protocols and reachability. We review scope and access before a discovery task runs, then reconcile the result with the known estate. A device appearing in inventory does not prove that setup, telemetry and software-management functions all work for it.

The site hierarchy, device naming and management addresses should reflect how the network is operated. We identify duplicates, stale records and exceptions so that later automation targets the intended equipment. Device discovery is therefore a controlled onboarding activity, not simply a wide scan followed by acceptance of every result.

Introduce automation with clear ownership

Configuration templates and supported provisioning workflows can reduce repetitive work. But an incorrect template can repeat an error quickly. We establish a review and testing process, define which setup is centrally owned and record permitted local exceptions. Automation should make the desired state clearer rather than hide it behind a button.

Software image management receives similar treatment. The chosen image must fit the device, role and wider solution. We separate image preparation from activation and define pre-checks, maintenance windows and post-change validation. A platform recommendation is an input to the engineering decision, not a substitute for reviewing the customer’s dependencies.

Make assurance useful to the support team

Assurance relies on suitable telemetry and a correct understanding of the network. We check collection, time alignment and representative client journeys before treating health scores as evidence from the live network. Missing data and an unhealthy service should be distinguishable in the monitoring process.

We help the team use the available evidence to narrow an incident, while retaining direct device and app checks where necessary. A suggested cause or automated insight is not automatically the confirmed root cause. The operating procedure should explain how an engineer checks it and when another team needs to be involved.

Plan the platform’s own lifecycle

Catalyst Center needs maintenance independently of the switches and controllers it manages. Upgrades, backups, integrations and recovery procedures are documented for the chosen rollout. A controller outage may leave current forwarding intact while preventing management or changing the visibility available to operations. The exact impact must be understood for the setup.

We review the supported upgrade path and recovery limitations before a platform change. Copying a virtual-machine snapshot or retaining an old installation file is not assumed to be a supported rollback. The handover identifies the tested backup process and the evidence still required for recovery acceptance.

Choose a practical engagement

MCI offers Catalyst Center deployment, focused onboarding, automation and assurance work, and review of a current installation. The scope can start with one useful workflow and expand after it is proven. Our Cisco and Meraki network services remain centred on the customer’s operational needs: a platform is successful when it helps the team make safer changes and solve real problems, not merely when installation has completed.
