Meraki MG gateway deployment links a supported cellular service to your site’s WAN edge. We check placement, power, carrier setup and account ownership, then test the agreed apps. The aim is a working primary or backup path. A gateway appearing online in Dashboard is one check within that process, not its end point.

01

Dashboard clarity

Structure organisations, networks and permissions around real operational ownership.

02

Consistent sites

Use repeatable standards without ignoring the differences between locations.

03

Practical operations

Keep cloud management connected to physical links, users and business services.

Confirm the model and carrier combination

We establish the exact MG model, regional suitability, software needs and supported carrier options before rollout. SIM and eSIM capabilities depend on the equipment and service arrangement. We check the subscription, activation duties and required access-point settings with the carrier or account owner, rather than assuming that an arbitrary mobile-data plan will support the intended business use.

The design also identifies how the MG connects to the current firewall or router. That device needs a suitable WAN interface and an agreed addressing method. Where another supplier manages the WAN edge, we get its handoff needs before installation. This prevents a correctly installed cellular gateway from remaining unusable because the receiving interface or routing policy was never prepared.

Select a maintainable installation position

Radio performance and practical access both influence placement. We assess suitable locations, cable routes and environmental exposure against the hardware’s installation guidance. A technically promising position may be unsuitable if it cannot be reached safely for maintenance or lacks permission for external mounting. Those constraints should be resolved before the day of rollout.

Power is part of resilience. We confirm the supported power method, the available budget and whether the gateway depends on the same equipment that the backup service is intended to protect against. An MG powered by a switch that loses power during the relevant outage may not provide useful continuity. The proposed design states these dependencies instead of counting devices as independent merely because they are separate boxes.

Prepare dashboard and local access

The gateway is assigned to the correct customer organisation and network, with suitable admin access and identification. We agree naming, site information and alert recipients so support engineers can locate it quickly. Device ownership and licensing are checked before it is dispatched, avoiding last-minute account changes by someone who lacks the necessary authority.

We also establish the supported local-access method for initial network access or recovery. Local and dashboard settings can interact. So the handover identifies which values are authoritative for the deployed model. Any sensitive carrier credentials or management details are held in the approved system. They are not placed in public documentation or left on an unlabelled sheet inside the cabinet.

Configure the handoff to the WAN edge

The network design specifies whether the MG uses its supported routing or passthrough arrangement and how the downstream device receives addressing. We check the effect of carrier-side translation and confirm the expected public-facing address where relevant. Passing an address through to another device does not by itself establish that the carrier has supplied a publicly reachable service.

We then apply the intended WAN policy on the receiving appliance. For a backup connection, this includes the conditions for use and any restrictions on non-essential traffic. For a primary connection, it includes the normal routing and app paths. The MG setup and edge-device setup are reviewed together so responsibility does not stop at the Ethernet cable between them.

Commission with representative traffic

Testing starts with cellular registration and management reachability, then moves to the services the customer actually needs. We check DNS, internet access and relevant VPN or business apps. We inspect the available radio information and interface state, recording the installation conditions so later troubleshooting has a meaningful baseline rather than only a photograph of a green status icon.

Where the gateway provides resilience, we exercise agreed failures and restoration. We check whether the intended apps recover and whether monitoring correctly reports degraded operation. A failure of the wired WAN and a loss of site power are different tests. The acceptance record should make clear which were performed and which remain outside the agreed scope.

Hand over the operational details

The commissioning record includes the serial number, carrier arrangement, mounting location, power source, cabling and setup ownership. It also identifies escalation contacts and the person responsible for data allowances or subscription renewal. An engineering team can investigate the radio path but may still need the carrier account holder to resolve a suspended or incorrectly provisioned service.

MCI can deliver MG installation as part of Meraki cellular connectivity or integrate a customer-supplied gateway into a current network. The quotation separates site work, setup, carrier coordination and ongoing support. This makes it clear what is included and leaves the customer with a connection that can be maintained after the installation engineer has left.
