response time

Average response is not a resolution time or a contractual guarantee. Support scope and response commitments are agreed for each engagement.

Cisco ISE troubleshooting is most effective when it identifies the exact stage of an access decision that failed. Users may report that the network rejects them, but the cause could be a client profile, certificate, directory lookup, RADIUS path or an enforcement device applying the wrong result. MCI Network Services investigates ISE incidents using correlated evidence, protecting working services while narrowing the fault instead of repeatedly resetting the whole platform.

01

Defined trust

Make access boundaries explicit rather than relying on an assumed internal network.

02

Controlled access

Connect identity, policy and network enforcement to the services people actually use.

03

Evidence for change

Test the intended security outcome and retain useful operational records.

Establish the impact and a reliable timeline

We first determine who is affected, which connection types fail and when the behaviour changed. A problem limited to one device model suggests a different investigation from a failure across every site. We compare affected and unaffected sessions and collect a precise time reference so that logs from clients, switches and ISE can be correlated.

Recent changes are reviewed without assuming they caused the incident. Certificate renewals, directory changes, endpoint updates and network maintenance can all be relevant. We record the evidence available before restarts or broad configuration changes erase it. Where service restoration is urgent, a controlled workaround is separated from the continuing root-cause investigation.

Follow the request through the access path

A client must reach the authentication process through its access device. We check whether the expected request reaches ISE, which node receives it and whether the response returns to the correct device. Network-device source addresses, shared-secret configuration and permitted traffic are assessed within the authorised scope.

No request at ISE is a different fault from a request that ISE rejects. The distinction prevents unnecessary account or policy changes when the actual problem is an upstream firewall or client supplicant. We use the relevant operational views and targeted captures where justified, with a collection scope designed to avoid exposing unrelated authentication traffic.

Inspect identity validation and certificate trust

For password-based methods, we examine the selected identity source, account state and the supported authentication flow. For certificate-based access, we check the chain, validity, identity attributes and client trust settings. A generic authentication failure can conceal several different causes, so the investigation follows the detailed reason rather than the user's shorthand description.

Time and name resolution are considered alongside the credential itself. An apparently valid certificate may fail because the endpoint and service disagree about time or identity. We do not advise users to accept an untrusted certificate merely to restore connectivity. Any temporary measure must be explicitly approved and proportionate to the incident.

Compare policy selection with the intended result

A request may authenticate correctly but match an unexpected authorisation rule. We inspect the attributes available at evaluation time, rule ordering and any external lookup used by the policy. The live request is compared with the approved access matrix rather than with an engineer's recollection of how the policy was meant to work.

The returned result then has to be applied by the network device. We check VLAN availability, access-control support and the actual session state. A correct ISE response can still lead to an unusable connection if the enforcement path is incomplete. This distinction helps assign remediation to the right team instead of treating every access failure as an ISE server defect.

04Data-centre connectivity with clear physical and logical boundaries.

Repeated neighbour or service interruptions, uneven node selection and resource pressure can produce failures that disappear during a quiet test. We examine trends over the affected period and compare node health, request distribution and dependency availability. A short successful login does not rule out a problem that occurs only during morning arrivals.

Where a failure is reproducible, we agree a limited test that changes one relevant condition at a time. We avoid broad protocol resets or simultaneous changes across nodes unless the recovery plan requires them. Each intervention has a stated hypothesis, expected observation and rollback route so that the investigation produces an explanation rather than a lucky recovery.

Escalate with a useful evidence package

Some incidents require Cisco or another provider to investigate a product-specific condition. We prepare the relevant versions, topology, timeline, symptoms and sanitised diagnostics, together with the tests already performed. This reduces repeated requests and helps separate a known limitation from a configuration or environmental fault.

Diagnostic bundles may contain personal data, network details or secrets. We agree their handling and remove unnecessary material where possible without destroying the evidence needed. The customer's approval and support entitlement determine the escalation route; MCI does not imply that every investigation includes a vendor support contract.

Close the loop after restoration

The final report distinguishes the confirmed cause, contributing conditions, temporary workaround and permanent correction. We verify legitimate and restricted access after the change and identify any similar sites or policies that deserve review. Our Cisco ISE services can include follow-on design or maintenance work, but those improvements remain a defined scope rather than an unannounced expansion of the incident engagement.
