Network discovery and inventory build a useful record of the devices your network relies on. We identify Cisco and Meraki equipment, its role, links and management owner. The results support engineering work, renewals and future changes. Gaps and uncertain findings stay visible so the inventory can be checked and maintained.

A device list is a starting point, not the finished result. An operational inventory needs to explain where equipment is, what it does and how it relates to the surrounding network. It should also show which information has been checked and which areas remain incomplete.

Define the estate and the sources of evidence

We establish the locations, network ranges and management systems included in the discovery. The scope may cover an office estate, a data centre, a group of branches or a particular area that has been inherited without reliable records.

Available evidence can include Cisco management information, Meraki dashboard records, current asset systems and authorised device access. Physical records and local knowledge may be needed where a management view cannot establish cabinet position, patching or ownership.

Discovery activity is planned with the network owner. The method should be appropriate to the setup, particularly where older equipment or sensitive operational services may not tolerate indiscriminate probing.

Record the information needed for real decisions

Useful inventory fields can include device identity, model, software, role, location, management address and the relevant support or licence references. The precise record set is agreed around the intended use rather than collected simply because a tool can export it.

We separate technical presence from ownership. Equipment may be customer-owned, provider-owned or part of a shared service, and those differences affect who can replace, configure or transfer it.

A management record may also need validation. Devices can remain in a dashboard or inventory after they have been removed from service. The process identifies where a record reflects a live asset, a spare or an item whose status is not yet confirmed.

Understand the important connections

An inventory becomes more useful when it includes the relationships between devices and services. We identify key uplinks, routing boundaries and external connections at a level appropriate to the scope.

The evidence may reveal differences between the documented topology and the live estate. Those differences are recorded for review rather than silently resolved by choosing whichever source looks more complete.

For locations with limited records, physical tracing may be required to establish the path through cabinets and patch panels. That work is coordinated so discovery does not become an accidental service interruption.

Reconcile records instead of producing another conflicting list

Many organisations already have several partial inventories. Procurement records, support contracts and management systems may describe the same device differently. We help reconcile identifiers and establish which source is authoritative for each type of information.

Duplicate, stale and uncertain entries are made visible. A report that simply combines every export can increase the apparent size of the estate without improving its accuracy.

The resulting record should support the next task. Licensing assessment, lifecycle planning and setup review all benefit from knowing which equipment is actually in scope and how confidently that is established.

Make the inventory maintainable after discovery

The handover identifies how the records should be updated when equipment is added, moved or retired. A one-off discovery loses value quickly if normal change processes do not maintain the information.

We can align the output with a current asset or documentation system where that is part of the engagement. Sensitive details are protected according to the agreed handling arrangements. A useful inventory does not need to circulate unrestrictedly across the business.

Where the estate also lacks diagrams and operational instructions, documentation recovery can develop those materials from the checked foundation. Discovery supplies evidence; documentation turns it into a broader support reference.

Discovery and inventory questions

Can you discover devices that are not in our current register?

The scope can seek to identify unrecorded equipment through authorised sources and methods. Coverage depends on access, visibility and the setup. We report those limits rather than claiming that every hidden or disconnected device has necessarily been found.

Will the inventory include licences and support dates?

It can include or link to that information where reliable evidence is available. Technical discovery alone may not establish commercial entitlements or contract ownership. Those details may need reconciliation with procurement and vendor records.

Can discovery be completed remotely?

Much of the logical information may be available remotely, but physical location, patching and certain ownership questions can require local verification. The delivery approach follows the evidence needed rather than assuming that dashboard visibility answers every inventory question.

How should we begin?

Describe the estate, available management systems and the reason you need better records. Arrange network discovery and inventory to establish a proportionate scope and a format your team can maintain after the engagement.
