Campus Gateway network integration connects a supported Cisco wireless termination service to the switching, routing, security and identity systems that make it useful. MCI Network Services defines and implements those interfaces with clear responsibilities and end-to-end tests. The focus is the boundary between Campus Gateway and the existing estate, where a missing VLAN, unsuitable MTU or unclear authentication dependency can prevent a technically healthy appliance from delivering a working service.
Coverage and capacity
Design Wi-Fi around the spaces, devices and traffic that depend on it.
Secure access
Align authentication, segmentation and guest access with the wider network.
Measured performance
Validate roaming, interference and user experience instead of relying on signal bars.
Map the complete client path
We trace representative corporate, guest and specialist traffic from the access point through the gateway and into the permitted network. The record identifies where traffic is encapsulated, terminated, addressed and inspected. It also identifies the return path. This makes it possible to review the service with the switching, firewall and application teams rather than discussing the gateway as an isolated device.
Each dependency has an owner. The wireless team may not control DHCP, DNS, identity certificates or upstream routing, but those services still influence the result. We agree the required changes and test responsibilities before commissioning. A project is more predictable when the relevant teams know what must be ready than when they are first contacted during a failed production connection attempt.

Prepare reachability and packet-size handling
The access-point and gateway paths must meet the supported networking requirements. We review routing, permitted traffic, intermediate security controls and MTU across the actual path. Encapsulation introduces considerations that a small ping may not reveal. Testing should therefore reflect representative traffic rather than relying solely on basic device reachability as evidence that the transport is ready.
We also examine management communication separately from client forwarding. Different permissions or routes may apply, and a management failure can have different consequences from a tunnel failure. The integration record states which path serves each purpose and how it is monitored. This helps support engineers avoid changing an unrelated firewall rule when the symptom comes from another part of the architecture.
A useful starting point
Not sure where to start?
Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Align uplinks and client VLAN presentation
The gateway’s connections to upstream switches are checked against the selected appliance’s supported topology. Port-channel configuration, optics, speeds and physical diversity must agree at both ends. We document permitted VLANs and the interfaces carrying them. An overly broad trunk may appear convenient during commissioning while introducing unnecessary exposure or making later fault investigation harder.
The upstream switching platform must support the expected scale and forwarding behaviour. We assess its resource and capacity requirements in the context of the whole campus, not only the gateway uplink speed. The design also records where client gateways reside. This prevents an implementation from extending or merging client networks accidentally while trying to preserve the appearance of the previous wireless topology.
Different environments. The same care.

DHCP and DNS are validated from the client’s actual network position. Relay, firewall and return-path requirements are included where applicable. We test fresh address acquisition and the relevant name-resolution paths, since an existing lease can make a misconfigured new service look healthy. Application testing follows those basic checks rather than assuming that address assignment proves the rest of the service works.
Identity integration is reviewed according to the selected authentication method and any supported gateway role. We check the addresses and attributes seen by the identity service and the policy returned to clients. Where Adaptive Policy or another supported feature is in scope, its prerequisites and enforcement boundary are verified explicitly. No security outcome is inferred solely from enabling a named feature in dashboard.
Treat shared discovery and specialist services carefully
Printing, meeting-room systems and other discovery-based applications may require additional design. We establish which services should be visible to which clients and whether the chosen platform supports the required handling. Broadly forwarding discovery or multicast traffic everywhere can undermine separation and create unnecessary load. The integration should expose only the services justified by the customer requirement.
We test these applications with their owners because network visibility alone may not establish usable functionality. A device can appear in a discovery list while its subsequent connection is blocked or routed incorrectly. The test record captures both stages and identifies any application-side dependency. This avoids resolving a discovery complaint through an unnecessarily permissive network change that affects unrelated users.
Verify the boundary and hand it over
Acceptance includes the expected traffic paths, denied connections and agreed failure conditions. We collect evidence from both sides of important boundaries and retain a configuration record that explains the final state. Temporary troubleshooting permissions are removed or explicitly approved with a defined lifetime. The support team receives an integration map rather than an unexplained list of settings.
This service complements Campus Gateway architecture and deployment. Share the existing topology and the teams responsible for switching, security and identity. MCI will scope the interfaces that need work, coordinate their readiness and validate a complete client path without assuming that the gateway can take over responsibilities still owned by the surrounding network.
