Average response is not a resolution time or a contractual guarantee. Support scope and response commitments are agreed for each engagement.

Catalyst SD-WAN controller deployment sets up the central services that manage and control the WAN. We plan their separate roles, access, certificates and network paths. Tests check that the agreed design is ready before live edges are added. Installing the hosts or enabling a hosted service is only part of this work.

01

The whole path

Understand how sites, providers, cloud networks and security controls fit together.

02

Resilience that can be tested

Separate a second circuit from genuine end-to-end service resilience.

03

Provider coordination

Keep addressing, routing and escalation ownership clear across organisations.

Confirm the intended deployment model

We start with the approved architecture and identify which components are hosted, customer-operated or provider-managed. Cisco's current component names and any legacy terminology in current records are reconciled so everyone understands the same roles. The proposal states who is responsible for the underlying platform, software maintenance and access administration.

The rollout model determines practical prerequisites. Resource sizing, supported software combinations, network placement and licensing must be confirmed for the intended estate. A small proof of concept should not be silently expanded into production without checking scale, availability and the support duties that change with it.

Prepare network and platform dependencies

Management, control and orchestration components need the supported reachability, name resolution and time services required by their setup. We document the relevant interfaces, addresses and permitted connections, including any firewalls or translation devices in the path. Connectivity is checked before an onboarding failure is blamed on edge setup.

Where components run on virtual infrastructure, we check the agreed resource and storage needs with the platform owner. Backup, monitoring and recovery duties are assigned at the same time. A controller app can be configured correctly while remaining vulnerable to a single unprotected virtualisation or storage dependency beneath it.

Establish certificates and trusted identities

Certificates and device identity are central to the control setup. We check the supported trust model, issuing arrangements and the records needed to authorise devices. Time consistency and certificate validity are checked because failures in those areas can look like ordinary network reachability problems.

The process also considers renewal and replacement. The customer needs to know who monitors certificate expiry and how a component is restored or replaced without losing its intended identity. Sensitive keys and admin credentials are handled through the approved secure process, not included in an unrestricted rollout document.

Configure administrative access and ownership

We set out administrator roles, authentication and the separation between routine monitoring and high-impact changes to the settings. Access to a central management platform can influence a large estate. So the permissions should reflect the work each person actually performs. External support access needs an owner and a removal process.

Emergency access is documented with its safeguards. An unavailable identity provider should not leave the organisation unable to recover. But a shared fallback account should not quietly become the normal administration method. We agree how exceptional access is approved, recorded and reviewed after use.

Validate component relationships before onboarding sites

The initial setup is checked for the expected communication between platform components and a controlled test edge. We check the relevant health, trust and control information rather than relying solely on a successful web login to the management interface. A reachable console does not prove that the estate can establish its intended control connections.

The test scope includes the supported software and setup model chosen for the project. We record versions, prerequisites and any restrictions that affect later onboarding or upgrades. This gives the rollout team a dependable baseline rather than a collection of installation steps with no evidence of the resulting state.

Exercise recovery within an agreed scope

Resilience checks reflect the approved architecture and the safety of the test setup. We may check loss of a component, a management path or a platform dependency where appropriate. The observations distinguish impact on administration, control information and app forwarding rather than treating every failure as identical.

Backups are checked for completeness and a documented restoration method. Where a full restoration cannot be exercised during the engagement, that limitation remains visible. A backup task reporting success is useful evidence of collection, not proof that a replacement setup has been restored and checked.

Hand over a maintainable control environment

The handover records component roles, addresses, access ownership, certificate duties, backup arrangements and escalation routes. Monitoring is connected to people who can respond, with clear distinctions between reduced redundancy and a service outage. Future platform upgrades follow a reviewed compatibility and recovery plan.

MCI can deploy the control setup as part of a wider Catalyst SD-WAN architecture or provide a defined rollout service for an approved design. Share the hosting model, expected site scale and limits on live changes. We can identify missing prerequisites and agree the evidence needed before production branches depend on the new platform.
