Data centre relocation networking plans the links and traffic paths needed as systems move to a new site. Circuits, cross-connects, public addresses and security rules must be ready in the right order. We build a cutover and recovery plan with the facilities, server, storage and app teams, then agree how each stage will be checked.

01

Workload-led design

Start with application, compute and storage dependencies rather than the switch model.

02

Clear failure domains

Understand which links, devices and sites can fail together.

03

Operational clarity

Make fabrics, external routing and management responsibilities supportable.

Build a service-level relocation inventory

We find the network devices, circuits, addresses and external connections involved, then link them to the services they support. A hardware list alone will not reveal a partner allowlist, a provider-managed router or a management system that must remain reachable throughout the move. Those dependencies are recorded before equipment is scheduled for removal.

The inventory distinguishes equipment moving physically from services being rebuilt or replaced. Each approach has different setup, support and rollback implications. We also identify apps that must move together and services that can be migrated earlier. This helps create a practical sequence rather than assuming the entire estate can be switched off and restarted as one operation.

Confirm the target facility and connectivity

Rack power, airflow, cabling, optics, patching and management access are checked against the proposed equipment. The target’s carrier handoffs and cross-connects need confirmed readiness, not only an order reference. We agree how each path will be tested before the production cutover and which supplier owns a fault if the service does not meet the specification.

Addressing and circuit changes are reviewed with app and security owners. Public IP changes, private peering updates and remote allowlists can affect systems outside the data centre. We identify notice periods and coordination needs using the customer’s actual provider information. A successful physical installation does not complete the relocation if external users and partners cannot reach the moved services.

Design temporary coexistence deliberately

Some moves need network access between the old and new locations while workloads transition. We set out the transport, route exchange and any justified Layer 2 extension. Temporary connections have clear scope, capacity and removal criteria. They should not introduce loops, accidental transit or a broad security bypass merely to make migration easier.

Gateway ownership and return paths are documented for each stage. A service may still reside at the old site while its internet or partner connection has moved. We test those intermediate states where practical and record which apps can operate in them. This prevents a cutover plan from assuming only the starting and final topologies matter.

Prepare the cutover and recovery sequence

The plan sets out prerequisites, exact duties, change steps, verification and stop conditions. We capture settings and live state, confirm alternative access and establish communication methods that remain available during the move. The authority to continue or invoke recovery is agreed in advance with the customer and participating teams.

Rollback is assessed against the physical reality. Once equipment has been removed or a circuit terminated, returning to the old state may require more than reversing commands. We find the points at which recovery changes from a network rollback to a wider restoration or forward-fix process. Those limits are made clear before the business accepts the cutover risk.

Validate services in a meaningful order

Initial checks establish physical links, management access, routing and security boundaries. Application owners then check representative transactions and supporting dependencies. DNS, authentication, monitoring and backup are included according to the service priorities. A device responding to a ping is not treated as proof that all workloads attached to it are ready for users.

Resilience is checked in the new location where authorised. Cabling or power arrangements can differ from the original design, and an apparently redundant connection may have acquired a shared dependency during the move. We record the tests performed, observed limitations and outstanding actions. Restoration of service and full completion of the relocation are distinguished where follow-up work remains.

Close the old site and update operational records

After acceptance, obsolete routes, cross-connects, credentials and management references are removed according to the approved plan. Circuit cancellation follows the customer’s commercial process and confirmed technical readiness. Documentation, inventory and escalation contacts are updated so that future engineers do not investigate a fault using the former location’s details.

MCI can lead the network workstream or support a customer-managed data-centre relocation across UK facilities. Related services include interconnect design and network migration planning. Provide the current topology, target facility and intended move constraints to begin. We will define the networking deliverables and the coordination needed to keep the wider relocation controlled.
