Cisco Campus Gateway provides a central point for traffic from supported cloud-managed access points. We assess and deploy it around your apps, scale and campus forwarding needs. The plan states which client traffic reaches which services. Features are checked against the actual requirement, since it is not a replacement for every controller or firewall function.

Establish whether central termination is useful

The starting point is the way the campus network is organised. A customer may want to avoid extending client VLANs to every access switch, support mobility across routed access areas or maintain a familiar central connection to security and gateway services. Those needs can make central wireless termination worth assessing. They do not mean that every branch or small office needs an extra appliance.

We compare the proposed service with the current forwarding arrangement and identify what would change. Local breakout may remain appropriate for some sites or network names. The assessment distinguishes management convenience from a genuine data-path need. So the business can see why the architecture is being recommended and which dependencies it introduces alongside the problems it is intended to solve.

Understand the role of Campus Gateway

Supported access points tunnel the relevant wireless traffic to Campus Gateway, which connects that traffic to the upstream network. The surrounding switching, routing and security services still have their own roles. We document those boundaries clearly rather than implying that central termination provides every gateway, firewall or identity function the customer needs.

Campus Gateway uses a cloud-managed architecture with specific supported hardware and software combinations. It is not simply a traditional wireless controller with the same setup copied into dashboard. We check the available feature set, firmware alignment, access-point compatibility and entitlement arrangements for the intended rollout. Any function that differs from the customer’s current platform is identified before migration planning, not discovered after the old service has been removed.

Design the campus integration

The design covers the path from access points to the gateway and the connections from the gateway to client networks. We review addressing, reachability, MTU, uplink topology and the upstream switch’s capacity for the expected estate. A basic ping between devices is useful but does not prove that every encapsulated traffic path and service dependency is correctly prepared.

Client VLANs, DHCP, DNS and security enforcement are mapped together. Guest and corporate services may need different termination or access policies, and those choices are documented rather than inherited accidentally from a current network. Our Campus Gateway network integration service examines these boundaries in detail, including the support teams responsible for each part of the forwarding path.

Plan mobility and failure behaviour

Central termination can support useful client mobility across access-layer boundaries, but app continuity still depends on radio coverage, authentication and endpoint behaviour. We find the intended roaming areas and representative clients, then define tests that show what happens during real movement. The design does not assume that a central appliance can correct poor RF coverage or an incompatible endpoint security setup.

Resilience is assessed separately. A cluster arrangement, uplink diversity and upstream service protection must be considered as a complete path. We check capacity under the agreed degraded condition rather than relying only on normal aggregate capacity. Failure and restoration tests record the observed client impact, with untested conditions stated clearly instead of turning a supported architecture into an unconditional no-outage promise.

Move into service through a controlled pilot

Deployment begins with prerequisites and an agreed baseline. We prepare dashboard ownership, networking and identity services, then introduce a representative group of access points and clients. The pilot checks traffic termination, policy, addressing and normal apps. Where the project changes a current wireless architecture, coexistence and rollback are planned before the first production area moves.

The results determine whether broader rollout is appropriate. A dashboard entry showing the appliance online does not prove that the customer service is ready. We review practical operations as well, including how engineers identify a client tunnel problem, retrieve suitable evidence and escalate a fault. Diagnostic information is handled through authorised access and a defined retention approach rather than collected indiscriminately.

Keep delivery and ongoing ownership distinct

A project handover includes the topology, supported software, setup relationships and acceptance results. It identifies who will manage firmware, policy changes and alarms after installation. A rollout engagement can be combined with ongoing management, but those duties and service hours need their own agreement. Equipment rollout alone does not prove an operational response commitment.

MCI’s Cisco and Meraki network services support UK organisations with single campuses and wider site estates. Share the current wireless architecture, the mobility or forwarding problem and the constraints on change. We can scope a Campus Gateway architecture review and explain whether the platform fits, with practical deliverables and a clear record of the dependencies that remain outside it.
