Average response is not a resolution time or a contractual guarantee. Support scope and response commitments are agreed for each engagement.
A Cisco network hardening review checks router, switch and management settings for avoidable exposure. Old defaults and temporary access can remain long after their purpose has ended. We identify justified changes and plan them around service and recovery needs. The aim is stronger control without locking out the team that must support the network.
Defined trust
Make access boundaries explicit rather than relying on an assumed internal network.
Controlled access
Connect identity, policy and network enforcement to the services people actually use.
Evidence for change
Test the intended security outcome and retain useful operational records.
Establish the platform and management model
We inventory the devices, software releases, management paths and operational owners within scope. Different Cisco operating systems and hardware families support different controls. So a setup standard must be matched to the equipment it governs. An accepted command on one platform is not evidence of equivalent protection on another.
The review also identifies central management, automation and monitoring systems. These can hold privileged access to many devices and deserve attention alongside the network equipment itself. We record who can change setup, where credentials are managed and how access is recovered when a central dependency becomes unavailable.

Review administrative access and accountability
We examine the permitted management sources, authentication methods, administrator roles and logging of setup activity. The aim is to restrict privileged access while preserving a controlled recovery route. Shared accounts, unnecessary remote services and unrecorded supplier access are assessed against their business purpose rather than accepted because they have always existed.
Central authentication is considered with its failure behaviour. An emergency local account may be necessary. But it needs ownership, secure handling and periodic review. We do not remove recovery access without a replacement or describe central authentication alone as proof that every admin action can be attributed to an individual.
A useful starting point

Bring the requirement. We will help you define the engineering work.
Protect the control plane and exposed services
Routing protocols, management interfaces and other device services need only the reachability required for their role. We review the interfaces and peers allowed to send relevant traffic and assess supported control-plane protections. Care is needed because overly broad restrictions can destabilise routing or prevent the network from reporting a genuine fault.
Unused services and legacy protocols are identified for removal or restriction where appropriate. The recommendation explains the dependency check needed before making a change. Disabling a feature without understanding its use by monitoring, time synchronisation or a provider handoff can replace a security concern with an avoidable operational outage.
Different environments. The same care.
Built around the work

Finance, banking and the wider private sector. We start with the systems and people that depend on your connections.
Finance & banking
Market-data paths, routing and provider coordination on clients’ behalf.
Financial-market services ↗Offices & multi-site teams
Reliable access between people, workplaces and business applications.
Office network design ↗Data centres & cloud
Network boundaries, workload connections and operational ownership.
Data centre networks ↗Check forwarding and access-layer safeguards
The scope may include VLAN and trunk setup, edge-port protection, segmentation and the placement of access lists. We assess whether each control matches the port or interface role. Applying an endpoint template to a legitimate switch uplink can interrupt service, while treating an unmanaged user connection as trusted can expose the wider topology.
We also consider IPv6 where it is enabled, rather than reviewing only the IPv4 setup. A restriction in one address family does not prove an equivalent restriction in the other. Our Cisco access list hardening service can provide a more detailed review of rule purpose, order and placement where the estate requires it.
Relate software risk to actual exposure
Software version and lifecycle information are checked against relevant Cisco advisories and support information. We identify whether the affected feature is present and reachable in the customer's setup. A version match is an important lead. But it does not replace checking the advisory's conditions or the operational implications of a proposed upgrade.
Where an update is recommended, the plan considers compatibility, available maintenance windows and recovery. A mitigation may reduce exposure while an upgrade is prepared, but its limitations are recorded. We do not describe a temporary workaround as a permanent resolution without evidence that it meets the customer's risk decision.
Review logging, time and configuration recovery
Security and operational logs are more useful when devices have consistent time and records reach an appropriate collection system. We review what is logged, whether the destination is reachable and who responds to significant events. Excessive logging can obscure useful signals, so collection is designed around actual investigation needs.
Configuration backups and restoration procedures are also checked. The existence of a backup job does not prove that a current, readable setup is available or that replacement hardware can be brought into service. We find the evidence needed to show recovery without assuming that a successful file transfer completes the need.
Deliver a staged hardening plan
The result is a prioritised record of findings, supporting evidence and proposed actions. We separate low-risk housekeeping from changes requiring app validation, provider coordination or a maintenance window. Agreed rollout work includes before-and-after checks and a practical rollback route.
MCI supports Cisco and Meraki networks across the UK. A hardening review can focus on an internet edge, campus switching estate or a defined collection of sites. Provide the device families, operating constraints and the security concerns you need addressed, and we can scope a review that improves control without pretending a standard template is suitable for every network.
