Industrial networking connects equipment that may be hard to stop, patch or replace. Even a quiet link can be vital to a production process. We plan Cisco-led network work with the people who own that process. They help set the scope, approve changes and agree the checks needed before the work is accepted.

Cisco-focused engineering

Design around the platform, traffic and failure behaviour you actually operate.

02

Change with evidence

Use pre-checks, acceptance criteria and a documented route back.

Operational handover

Keep the configuration, diagrams and responsibilities understandable after delivery.

Start with the operation, not the switch model

We ask what the network enables and what happens when communication is interrupted. A lost connection might delay a report, stop a process or leave an operator without necessary visibility. Those consequences influence topology, maintenance windows, monitoring and the level of evidence required before equipment is changed.

The assessment identifies control-system suppliers, engineering workstations, controllers, operator interfaces and external dependencies. It also records who may authorise tests. Network engineers should not assume that permission to manage a switch includes permission to interrupt connected machinery or alter a controller’s communications settings.

Map the estate without creating avoidable disruption

Industrial setups often include long-lived devices with incomplete records. We review current diagrams, switch information and supplier documentation before selecting any discovery method. Passive observations may provide useful insight, but their visibility depends on where traffic can be observed and whether the relevant protocols are understood.

Active scanning is not a routine first step on every operational network. Where it is justified, the scope and method need approval from people who understand the connected equipment. The resulting inventory should distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions and identify devices that require further investigation rather than presenting an incomplete picture as authoritative.

Design connectivity for its environment

Switch choice needs to account for operating temperature, enclosure needs, power arrangements, physical installation and the interfaces needed by connected equipment. Optics, copper links and industrial connectors must match both the setup and the supported hardware. A familiar office switch may not be appropriate simply because its port count is enough.

Our Cisco Industrial Ethernet Design service develops those needs into a topology and addressing plan. It considers the location of routed boundaries, traffic that must stay within an operational area and the connections needed to business systems. The design also identifies dependencies outside the networking scope, such as electrical installation and control-system setup.

Separate access without breaking production

A useful segmentation design starts with required communications. We check which systems need to exchange data, which teams need engineering access and where shared services sit. Firewall rules, routing boundaries and access controls should reflect those relationships rather than divide the estate into arbitrary VLANs.

We can support an industrial zone-and-boundary design. But a network setup does not by itself certify the customer’s operational setup. The owner remains responsible for assessing process, safety and regulatory needs. Where those obligations influence the project, specialist assessors and equipment suppliers should be involved in the agreed scope.

Make resilience claims specific

Two switches, a ring or a spare fibre do not on their own provide the recovery an industrial app requires. We review shared power, physical routes, endpoint connections and the supported redundancy method. Detection and reconvergence need to be considered alongside the app’s own timeout and recovery behaviour.

Testing must be coordinated with operations. A deliberate network interruption that is acceptable in a lab may not be safe during production. We agree which scenarios can be exercised, which need a planned shutdown and which must rely on documented evidence. The report states those limits rather than claiming that every possible failure has been proved harmless.

Give remote suppliers controlled access

Equipment vendors may need remote diagnostics or maintenance, but unrestricted access to an entire operational network is rarely an appropriate default. We establish named access, approval, destination restrictions and a method for ending access when the work is complete. Availability of a remote-access product is not evidence that every session is authorised.

The support process should identify who can approve an urgent connection and how activity is recorded. It should also distinguish a supplier’s obligations for its machinery from MCI’s network duties. That separation avoids a network support request becoming an undocumented promise to repair the production system itself.

Deliver changes with operational ownership

An industrial engagement may cover assessment, design, rollout, migration or ongoing network support. Each needs a defined handover: diagrams, approved traffic flows, records of the settings, monitoring arrangements and recovery procedures. We coordinate network work with the customer’s operations team rather than impose a generic office rollout method.

MCI provides Cisco and Meraki network services across the UK, with industrial work scoped around the actual site and equipment. Tell us which operation depends on the network, which suppliers are involved and what can safely be interrupted. Those details let us propose an engineering service that respects the way your setup works.
