Wi-Fi 7 can provide useful new wireless capabilities, but the business case depends on the clients, applications and radio environment that will use them. Replacing access points alone does not guarantee faster applications or more reliable roaming. MCI Network Services assesses and deploys Cisco and Meraki Wi-Fi 7 as part of a complete network design, including security, switching, power and the practical transition from the existing wireless estate.

01

Coverage and capacity

Design Wi-Fi around the spaces, devices and traffic that depend on it.

02

Secure access

Align authentication, segmentation and guest access with the wider network.

03

Measured performance

Validate roaming, interference and user experience instead of relying on signal bars.

Start with the improvement the business needs

A wireless refresh should address an identifiable problem. That might be busy collaboration spaces, growth in connected devices, demanding local applications or equipment approaching the end of its supported life. We establish the present baseline and the outcome the customer expects. A newer wireless generation is not evidence that an unrelated internet circuit or application-server bottleneck will disappear.

We also examine the device population. Some users may have current laptops capable of using newer features, while scanners, printers or specialist endpoints may remain unchanged for years. The design needs to serve both groups appropriately. We do not assume that every device connected to a Wi-Fi 7 access point will operate with the same capabilities or benefit equally from the upgrade.

Understand capabilities without relying on headline rates

Wi-Fi 7 introduces features such as multi-link operation and, where supported and permitted, wider channels. Their availability and useful effect depend on the access point, software, client and deployment conditions. We assess the relevant capabilities for the proposed equipment rather than treating every item in the wireless standard as a feature guaranteed across every product combination.

Capacity planning considers airtime, interference and the number of clients sharing a space. A very wide channel may suit a particular throughput requirement but can reduce the number of separate channels available for reuse. The choice is therefore made for the site, not simply set to the largest value offered. Application testing provides more useful evidence than comparing advertised maximum radio rates with an ordinary internet speed test.

Plan spectrum and coverage for the location

A design using 6 GHz needs a current view of UK spectrum conditions, device support and the building environment. We check the applicable regulatory domain and permitted operation at the time of deployment. Availability in another country does not establish what can be enabled on a UK site, and a regulatory development does not automatically mean a particular product release implements it.

Coverage is assessed for the intended bands and client devices. Existing access-point positions may remain suitable, but that must be tested rather than assumed. Building materials, mounting and user density all matter. Our 6 GHz wireless planning service examines these questions in detail, including the distinction between a regulatory opportunity and a supported installation that can actually be delivered.

Prepare the wired and identity foundations

Higher-capability access points can change power and Ethernet requirements. We review the switch ports, available PoE budget, cabling and upstream capacity against the actual selected models. A device that powers on may still operate differently when its available power is below the requirement for the intended functions. The design includes those dependencies before procurement or installation begins.

Security and onboarding need equal attention. Modern wireless modes and 6 GHz operation impose requirements that older clients or authentication configurations may not meet. We review the supported security modes, certificates and endpoint configuration, then plan how legacy devices will be handled. The objective is an intentional transition, not weakening the new service simply to preserve every historical setting without investigation.

Pilot before broad replacement

A useful pilot includes representative users and applications under realistic conditions. We test fresh authentication, ordinary work, roaming and relevant failure behaviour. Where features such as multi-link operation are part of the business case, we verify their actual negotiation and effect with compatible clients rather than assuming they are active because the access point supports them.

The pilot also identifies operational changes. Engineers need to understand new telemetry, client capabilities and troubleshooting evidence. We document exceptions and decide whether they justify an endpoint update, a separate service or a revised rollout sequence. A staged Wi-Fi 7 migration can then proceed on the basis of observed results instead of a building-wide experiment.

Make the investment measurable

Acceptance criteria should describe the service the business receives: usable capacity in defined spaces, reliable access for agreed devices and a supportable security model. We record the test conditions and explain any limitations. Future device growth and application change can then be compared with that baseline rather than with a marketing claim that was never measured on the customer’s network.

MCI provides Cisco and Meraki network services across the UK, with particular focus on London, Kent, Sussex, Essex and Berkshire. Share the current wireless estate, the problem driving the refresh and the devices that matter most. We can assess whether Wi-Fi 7 is the right next step and prepare a practical deployment scope that balances current needs with a maintainable path for future growth.
