ThousandEyes Enterprise Agents run supported tests from locations you control. Where an agent sits affects what its results mean. We plan hosting, resources, network access and support duties, using supported Cisco platforms where suitable. The aim is to keep each test point reliable and make its view of the service clear to the team.

01

Useful visibility

Monitor service-relevant conditions rather than collecting alerts without ownership.

02

Controlled change

Keep maintenance, automation and configuration work reviewable and recoverable.

03

Clear escalation

Connect incidents to the right engineering, provider and business contacts.

Place agents where the question occurs

We find the sites and paths the customer needs to observe. An agent near a branch user, a data-centre app or a private interconnect can answer different questions. Placement is chosen deliberately rather than simply using the most convenient virtual machine or switch with spare capacity.

The expected forwarding path is recorded. Management VLANs, proxies and local internet exits may make an agent’s traffic differ from that of ordinary users. We explain those differences and, where necessary, use extra vantage points instead of claiming that one agent represents every connection at the site.

Verify the supported hosting option

Enterprise Agents can be deployed in supported forms with different prerequisites and test capabilities. We check the current needs for the chosen setup, including operating system, compute, storage and any browser-test components. Embedded Cisco device support is checked for the exact model and software rather than inferred from the product family name.

Resource allocation includes the planned test load. A small pilot can behave differently when more tests or shorter intervals are introduced. We establish a manageable initial scope and identify the capacity and entitlement checks needed before expanding the agent’s duties.

Prepare network and platform access

The agent requires appropriate addressing, routing, DNS and network access to the ThousandEyes platform and its test targets. We review firewall and proxy needs with the customer’s security team, limiting access to the supported rollout needs. Registration should not be achieved by temporarily opening unrestricted network access and leaving it in place.

Time information and certificate behaviour are checked where relevant to the chosen tests. A measurement service depends on more than the agent process running. We document host and network dependencies so an incident can be investigated without assuming every failure originates in the monitored app.

Protect registration and administration

Account-group tokens and other credentials are handled as secrets. We establish who owns the agent, who may change its tests and how access is removed when the service or personnel change. Deployment records should not expose reusable tokens in ordinary reports or support tickets.

Administrative duties include host maintenance where the customer controls the operating setup. The networking engagement may configure the agent and its network access while another team owns the host or hypervisor. That boundary is agreed clearly so software and security maintenance do not fall between teams.

Test the measurements, not just registration

After installation, we run the agreed tests and compare their results with the expected path and known service behaviour. We confirm the agent’s identity, location labels and account assignment. An agent shown as online is not enough evidence that its tests are observing the intended destination from the right network.

Collection interruption and recovery are also considered. We check how stale data or agent unavailability appears to operators and whether alerts distinguish it from a target failure. This prevents a monitoring-host problem from being reported automatically as an outage of every app it tests.

Plan lifecycle and replacement

Agent software and its hosting setup need an update and support plan. We review supported upgrade paths and the impact on tests, integrations and historical continuity. Replacing an agent may affect identifiers or the way results are compared. So the operational record should describe the intended transition. Alert rules and location labels are checked again after replacement.

Capacity and test relevance are reviewed over time. An app that has moved or a site that now uses another internet exit may invalidate the original placement assumptions. Retiring or relocating agents is a controlled monitoring change, not merely a housekeeping task.

Deliver an operational handover

The handover records hosting needs, dependencies, access ownership, tests and collection-health checks. It also identifies limitations in supported test types or local path representation. Engineers receive a practical basis for distinguishing agent, network and app problems rather than an installation screenshot alone.

MCI can deploy Enterprise Agents within a wider ThousandEyes implementation or review a current estate. We scope the work around useful observation points and ongoing ownership, ensuring that the agent remains a dependable source of evidence as the network, hosting platform and apps evolve.
